January 24, 2014 - Ontario Hockey League (OHL)
Kingston Frontenacs News Release

KingstonÂ- - The Kingston Frontenacs are proud to host the Memorial Cup as part of the league's Hockey Day in the OHL initiative on Sunday, January 26, 2014. The memorial cup has roots in Kingston, having been proposed by Capt. James T. Sutherland as a memorial to remember players who died during the first World War. It is now awarded annually to the Canadian Hockey League champion following a tournament between the host team and the champions of the CHL's three member leagues: the Ontario Hockey League, the Western Hockey League, and the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League. When the Memorial Cup was created, it was dedicated in honour of the soldiers who died fighting for Canada in the war. It was rededicated to honour all soldiers who died fighting for Canada in any conflict during the 2010 Mastercard Memorial Cup tournament.

"We are honoured to have the Memorial Cup at our game on Sunday to give Kingston hockey fans a chance to get up close and see the names on the trophy," said Justin Chenier, Executive Director of Business Operations with the Kingston Frontenacs." As the birthplace of hockey and the birthplace of the Memorial, it's neat to be able to bring it home to our fans to see, especially when they can get up close and see the names of many great hockey players who have been on Memorial Cup-winning teams over the years, including our General Manager Doug Gilmour who won the cup with the Cornwall Royals in 1981."

The Memorial Cup will be on display for the entire game on Sunday, January 26, 2014, in the Corner Pub of the Rogers K-Rock Centre between Gate 2 and Gate 3. Doors open at 12 noon and puck drop is at 1:00 p.m., an hour earlier than normal Sunday games to accommodate the province-wide broadcast of the Kingston vs. Belleville, the Sarnia vs. Windsor, and the North Bay vs. Peterborough games.

The Memorial Cup will make a visit on Tuesday, January 28, 2014 at 1:00 p.m. at Ecole Sir John A Macdonald Public School and on Wednesday, January 29, 2014 at 1:00 p.m. at St. Patrick Catholic School. Both events are closed to public (media wishing to attend should contact each specific board for arrangements).
