Real Salt Lake Update

January 21, 2014 - Major League Soccer (MLS)
Real Salt Lake News Release

REAL SALT LAKE SIGNS ENGLISH MIDFIELDER LUKE MULHOLLAND

Real Salt Lake announced on Tuesday that it has signed English MF Luke Mulholland. Per league and club policy, further terms of the deal will not be disclosed.

The 25-year-old Mulholland spent the last two seasons with the NASL's Tampa Bay Rowdies. The Preston, England native was wildly successful in his two years in Tampa, scoring 17 goals and registering 13 assists in 51 league appearances, helping the team to the 2012 NASL Soccer Bowl title and becoming the first player to be named to the NASL Best XI in back-to-back seasons. Mulholland and RSL backup GK Jeff Attinella were teammates in Tampa in 2012.

Mulholland began his professional career in 2011 with the USL Pro Wilmington Hammerheads, where he was named 2011 USL Pro Rookie of the Year and was selected to the USL Pro Team of the Year. Mulholland signed with the NASL Minnesota Stars late in the NASL's 2011 campaign, helping lead the team to that year's NASL title. Mulholland started and played 90 for Wilmington in the RSL's 2-0 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup win over the Hammerheads at Rio Tinto Stadium on June 28, 2011.

Prior to his professional career, Mulholland played four seasons at Wingate University, recording 73 appearances and notching 37 goals and 26 assists. Mulholland was named a NCAA Division II First Team All-American and South Athletic Conference Player of the Year in 2009.

REAL SALT LAKE MAKES THREE SELECTIONS IN 2014 MLS SUPERDRAFT

The 2014 MLS SuperDraft came to a close on Tuesday, with Real Salt Lake making a total of three selections in the annual draft. In the first round that was held on Jan. 16 in Philadelphia, RSL selected University of California DF Ryan Neil with the 18th overall pick. The Claret-and-Cobalt went on to pick on Tuesday Georgetown MF Joey Dillon in the third round with the 53rd overall pick and Coker College FW Daniel Jackson in the fourth round with the 70th overall pick.

Neil spent four years at Cal, earning All-Pac-12 second-team honors in 2013 and 2012. The 22-year-old played and started 20 games this past collegiate season, recording one goal and four assists and earning an All-Pac-12 second-team selection as a senior at Berkeley. Neil helped the Golden Bears reach the quarterfinals of the 2013 NCAA College Cup, putting in a full 90 minutes in the team's 2-1 quarterfinal loss to the University of Maryland. In his junior year, Neil earned a spot on the NSCAA All-Far West third team and was a member of the All-Pac-12 second-team while recording a career-high five assists. The Mission Viejo, Calif. native appeared in 67 games, made 48 starts and tallied a total of two goals and 13 assists in his collegiate career.

A native of Rochester Hills, Mich., Dillon was a four-year starter at Georgetown, starting 83 of the 86 games he appeared in for the Hoyas. Dillon, who will turn 22 on Saturday, co-captained Georgetown, was named All-Big East first-team and earned Big East Midfielder of the Year honors in 2013.

Jackson had a successful senior season at Division II Coker College, scoring 14 goals and adding two assists in 17 games for the Hartsville, S.C. school. Jackson was a South Atlantic Conference first-team selection, a second-team Daktronics NCAA Division II All-Southeast Region selection and a third-team NSCAA All-South Atlantic Conference selection.

Neil, Dillon and Jackson will report to Salt Lake City for entrance physicals on Friday. Real Salt Lake will officially open preseason camp on Saturday, when the team will travel to the Real Salt Lake-Arizona Academy in Casa Grande, Ariz. for its first leg of preseason training.
