Plymouth Whalers Hammer Saginaw, 7-2, in Monday Matinee

PLYMOUTH - First star Connor Chatham scored two goals with an assist, second star Cullen Mercer had a goal and two assists and theid star Connor Sills scored a shorthanded goal as the Plymouth Whalers beat the Saginaw Spirit, 7-2, in an Ontario Hockey League game played Monday after at Compuware Arena.

The seven-goal output is the most the Whalers have scored in one game all season.

Plymouth breaks a two-game losing streak and is now 17-23-0-5, good for eighth place and the final playoff spot on the OHL's Western Conference race. Saginaw had a six-game winning streak snapped and is now 22-18-4-1 (sixth place in the OHL Western Conference).

Besides Chatham's pair (6-7 on the year), Mercer's single (2) and Sills' goal (3), the Whalers also received goals from Alex Peters (2), Francesco Vilardi (8), and Matt Mistele (10). In addition, Plymouth goaltender Alex Nedeljkvoic stopped 58-of-60 Saginaw shots.

Former Whaler Cody Payne scored both Saginaw goals (16th and 17th of the year).

Plymouth led 4-0 after one period, chasing Saginaw and Red Wing prospect goaltender Jake Paterson at the 14:50 mark of the first period after Sills scored to give the Whalers their 4-0 lead.

The Whalers increased their lead to 6-1 after forty minutes.

Saginaw outshot Plymouth, 60-39.

Plymouth plays on the road Friday in Kitchener (7:20 pm, 88.1FM WSDP) before returning home Saturday to host Sarnia at 7:05 pm at Compuware Arena (7pm, CN-900, 88.1fM WSDP).
