Saint John Sea Dogs News Release

BOISBRIAND, PQ - Daniel Walcott's goal with 34.3 seconds left in overtime gave the Blainville-Boisbriand Armada a 3-2 victory over the Saint John Sea Dogs in Quebec Major Junior Hockey League action Sunday at the Centre d'excellence Sports Rousseau.

Oliver Cooper and Noah Zilbert each netted and goal and assist for Saint John (11-27-1-3) while Matthew Highmore assisted on both goals.

Goalie Sebastien Auger was brilliant with 35 stops in helping his team earn a point. He was named second star.

Nikita Jevpalovs and Marc-Olivier Roy had the other goals for the Armada (28-9-4-3), which ended a two-game losing skid.

The Sea Dogs scored the opening goal just seventy-four seconds into the game.

Highmore's backhand shot from the slot was kicked out by Blainville-Boisbriand goalie Samuel Montembeault. Cooper batted home the rebound in the crease and Saint John had an early lead.

The Armada tried to counter about two minutes later.

Roy broke in on the right wing side, cut in front and tried to beat Auger through his legs, but the Sea Dogs' netminder closed the door.

Blainville-Boisbriand tied it up on a power play just past the six-minute mark, when Saint John-native and former Sea Dog Ryan Tesink sent a back-door pass from the slot to the left circle, where Jevpalovs sent a laser underneath the crossbar.

The game remained tied 1-1 after twenty minutes with the Armada holding a 13-5 edge in shots on goal.

Cooper nearly gave Saint John the lead again four minutes into the middle frame.

The Sea Dogs' leading scorer brought the puck in on the right wing, went behind the net and attempted a wraparound at the right post, but Montembeault got his right leg down just in time to make the save.

Blainville-Boisbriand took the lead with under six minutes left in the second period, just three seconds after a Saint John penalty ended.

Armada forward Samuel Hodhod carried the puck wide on the left wing and fed a pass into the slot for Roy, who rifled a shot past Auger's blocker to make it a 2-1 game.

Auger's best stop of the period came with about four minutes to go.

Tesink was left alone in front of the net snapped a high shot that the 19-year-old goalie punched wide with his blocker.

Shots in the second period were ten apiece, while Blainville-Boisbriand took a one-goal lead into the third.

Three minutes into the final frame, rookie forward Mathieu Joseph danced around the Armada defence on the right side and forced Montembeault to make a pad save.

Saint John netted the equalizer halfway through the third on a 5-on-3 power play.

Highmore sent a pass from the left corner into the low slot, where it went off Cooper's skate to Zilbert, who buried his second goal in as many games.

Auger stood tall again with the Sea Dogs shorthanded late in regulation time.

Jevpalovs pounded a bullet, one-time slap shot from the high slot that Auger knocked down with his glove and then smothered in a face-down snow angel position.

Saint John were outshot 10-8 in the third, but forced overtime with a 2-2 score.

The Sea Dogs killed off 97 seconds of a 4-on-3 power play to start the extra frame.

Joseph gave Saint John their best chance to win, charging down the right wing on a partial breakaway, but he was engaged by an Armada backchecker just as he was about to take a shot on goal.

The winning goal came with 34.3 seconds left, following pressure in the Sea Dogs' zone.

Jevpalovs muscled his way to the front of the net and got a shot on goal that Auger stopped, but Walcott stormed in from the point and buried the rebound for the Armada.

The Sea Dogs have lost three straight games.

It's the first time Saint John lost in overtime to the Armada franchise dating back to its days as the St. John's Fog Devils.

Walcott was named the game's first star while Jevpalovs took third star in front of 2,908 fans in attendance.

The Sea Dogs' next game is Wednesday, January 15th at 7 p.m. against the Moncton Wildcats at the Moncton Coliseum. This is the make-up game for the contest that was postponed due to snow back on December 15th. Listen LIVE on News 88.9 FM. Watch LIVE on TELUS (via theqmjhl.ca - fee applies).
