Storm Acquire Pierog from Petes

January 7, 2014 - Ontario Hockey League (OHL)
Guelph Storm News Release

The Guelph Storm Hockey Club announced today that they have acquired centre Stephen Pierog along with four 2nd round picks (2015, 2016, 2018 and 2019) from the Peterborough Petes in exchange for Hunter Garlent.

A Guelph native, Pierog has played three seasons in the OHL with the Peterborough Petes. Last season, the Guelph Jr. Storm graduate was the co-leader on the Petes in goals with 19 and added 16 assists to finish second on the club in points. In 167 games played, the 19-year old has recorded 39 goals and 29 assists.

"We found ourselves with too many top six type forwards and felt that we needed a player who would excel as a two-way third line forward," stated Guelph Storm General Manager Mike Kelly. "Peterborough on the other hand needed a number one center to help generate offense and create energy. Both organizations get players that fit their respective needs and the draft picks compensate for the difference in their ages."

"Hunter Garlent is one of the best 18-year old forwards in the OHL. I firmly believe that he will be a huge part of Peterborough's success over the next two and half years," added Kelly. "Stephen Pierog brings a very high compete level, combined with good hockey sense and skill, plus above average grit. We feel that those qualities will be very important for our team if we are to go deep into the playoffs. We wish to thank Hunter and his family for their commitment to the Storm over the past two and half years, as well as welcoming Steven and his family to the Storm organization."

Pierog is expected to make his Storm debut on Thursday night when the team travels to St. Catharine's to face the Niagara IceDogs. One night later, Guelph will square off against the London Knights at the Sleeman Centre on Friday Night Hockey before finishing the weekend at home on Sunday afternoon against Kitchener.
