Miracles Basketball Weekend Report

December 29, 2013 - National Basketball League of Canada (NBL Canada) - Moncton Miracles News Release

The Miracles won two back-to-back games at home this weekend against the Island Storm, bringing an end to the team's losing streak. Below are the individual game reports:

December 27th:

For the first time all season, When the Miracles needed defensive stops, they got them. The Moncton Miracles rode eight consecutive stops in the fourth quarter to close out The Island Storm 104-97.

The Miracles trailed for most of the game, but when the Storm's hot shooting tailed off, and the defensive intensity turned up, the Miracles rode key buckets from Johnny Mayhane, Trayvon Lathan, and veteran Cordell Jeanty to a lead.

The Storm heated up early, hitting 12 threes and shooting 55% from range, but the Storm also were sloppy with the ball with 18 turnovers in the first half, finishing with 27 total.

The Miracles were lead by 30 points from Johnny Mayhane, and 21 points, 4 rebounds, and 3 assists from Trayvon Lathan. Cordell Jeanty contributed with 13 points and 9 rebounds in a particularly clutch stretch of basketball in the fourth quarter.

The Storm countered with 20 points from Greg Plummer and 16 points and 11 rebounds from Antonio Ballard.

The Miracles shot 45% from the field in the game.

December 28th:

The Moncton Miracles are on a winning streak! With their 96-83 win over the Island Storm, they've won two straight games and are looking to push their streak to three when they play the St. John Mill Rats on New Year's Eve.

The Miracles came out of the gate strong and never looked back. The home team lead by as many as 29 points until the Storm's bench made a run at the end of the game, but it was too little too late.

Stanley Robinson was the top performer for the Miracles with 26 points and 11 rebounds to go along with a 2:30 stretch where he had three huge dunks and a steal. Johnny Mayhane also was a top contributor with 20 points including hitting 4 three pointers.

The Storm were lead by Antonio Ballard with 18 points and 11 rebounds. Beyond Ballard, the Storm struggled to get anything going. With both teams on their third of three games in three nights, shooting percentages figured to be low. The Storm shot a miserable 33% from the field and 20% from three while the Miracles surprisingly had their best shooting performance of the week with 49% from the field and 50% from three.

There were of course some lowlights to go with those highlights, though. The two teams combined for 50 turnovers (30 for the Miracles), 25 missed free throws and there were 3 technical fouls given out by officials.

The Miracles will return from the road after their trip to St. John to play at home on Jan. 2, 5, and 9.
