Saint John Sea Dogs News Release

MONCTON - Sebastien Auger made 30 saves in a first-star performance, leading the Saint John Sea Dogs to a 2-1 victory over the Moncton Wildcats in Quebec Major Junior Hockey League action Sunday at the Moncton Coliseum.

Spencer Smallman and Kelly Bent had goals for Saint John (10-24-0-3), which won three of four games to end the 2013 calendar year and split the weekend home-and-home match-up.

Christophe Lalonde scored the only goal for Moncton (21-18-0-2), which saw its nine-game winning streak come to an end in front of 4,471 fans in attendance.

Auger set the tone for the afternoon in the game's opening minute.

Lalonde and Ryan Penny worked a give-and-go from the right side, with Lalonde getting a clear shot from the low slot that the 19-year-old Saint John goalie trapped with his right arm against his body.

Moncton missed another chance to get the first goal with less than ten minutes left in the opening period.

An initial shot from the left side deflected off a player in front of the goal and bounced right to forward J.C. Campagna, parked off the right side of the crease. The Dallas, Texas, native fluttered a bouncing puck through the crease and past a wide open net.

The Sea Dogs opened the scoring past the twelve-minute mark.

Oliver Cooper fired a shot from the left wing side that Wildcats' goalie Alex Dubeau stopped, but Smallman chipped home the rebound from in front of the net.

Defenceman Bailey Webster, making his QMJHL debut, picked up an assist on the play for his first career point.

Saint John led 1-0 after twenty minutes despite being outshot 10-8.

Moncton tested Auger again four minutes into the second.

Overager Christopher Caissy barged in on the left side and muscled his way to the net, forcing a low shot that Auger denied with his right leg.

Saint John's reigning team MVP also stoned Lalonde with a glove stop on a 2-on-1 past the halfway mark.

The Sea Dogs doubled their lead with under six minutes left in the second period.

Webster sent a low shot from the right point that hit a Moncton stick and went across the slot to Bent, who snapped the puck into an open cage for a 2-0 Saint John advantage.

Late in the period, Moncton forward Stephen Johnson darted in on the left wing side, charged across the crease and tried to tuck the puck inside the right post, only to be denied by Auger's left leg.

The Sea Dogs were outshot 14-8 in the middle frame and led 2-0.

Dubeau kept the two-goal deficit intact in the opening minute of the third.

The 19-year-old, playing in his 39th of Moncton's 41 games, used his chest and left arm to stop and hold a one-time snap shot from the slot by Noah Zilbert.

About four minutes later, as Moncton enjoyed a power play, Auger robbed Lalonde with a glove save on a shot from the inside edge of the left circle.

The Wildcats broke the goalie's shutout bid with 17.9 seconds left on a 6-on-4 power play chance with their net empty.

Caissy moved in on the left side and took a shot that went off a stick and into the right circle, where Lalonde corralled the loose disk and ripped it into the net.

Moncton could not generate another scoring chance in the final seconds with an extra attacker remaining on the ice.

Webster was named second star with two assists in his first career game.

Dubeau took third star honours with 22 saves.

Moncton still leads the standings in the Brunswick News Rivalry Cup, 4-2, as each team earns a point for any victory in the season series.

Saint John's next game is Saturday, January 4th, at 7 p.m. against the Halifax Mooseheads at Harbour Station. Tickets are available at the Harbour Station box office, online at tickets.harbourstation.ca, or by calling, 657-1234.
