Mighty Miele Registers Hat Trick, 5 Points as Pirates Sail Past Sharks
December 14, 2013 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Portland Pirates News Release
Lewiston, ME - The Worcester Sharks could not contain Andy Miele, who finished Saturday's game tying a career-high five-point night and his first career hat trick as a professional, as the Pirates defeated the Sharks 5-1
On the night of the Pirates' annual Teddy Bear Toss, presented by Central Maine Medical Center, Miele gave the hometown fans plenty to cheer about. At 15:47 of the first, Andy Miele opened the scoring with an unassisted shorthanded goal, sending hundreds of teddy bears cascading over the boards and onto the ice. In total, 320 bears were collected to be donated to Lewiston/Auburn first responders.
The Pirates extended their lead in the second when Brandon Yip beat Sateri from the slot. After receiving a drop pass from Miele, Rostislav Klesla started down the left wing boards and feathered a pass onto the stick of Yip who one-timed it past the Worcester netminder.
Miele then gave the Pirates a three-goal lead at 11:26 in the second, scoring on a semi-breakaway. Chris Brown found Miele streaking towards the Sharks end and hit him in stride, allowing Miele to easily skate past the defender and fire a quick wrister past Sateri.
In the third, the Sharks began tried to climb their way back into the game with an early goal, but it was no use as Miele continued his strong performance, completing his hat trick on the power play shortly after the Sharks goal. Miele's hat trick was the second three-goal game on a Teddy Bear Toss night this season in the AHL and the first hat trick for the Pirates since Phil Lane did it last season on April 20th against the Connecticut Whale.
Jordan Martinook would tally the final Pirates goal, scoring on a rebound in front of Sateri and putting the icing on the cake.
Miele's five-point night falls one short of the Pirates team record of six, last done by Ryan Getzlaf on Dec. 7, 2005 and scored one goal each on the penalty kill, power play and even strength. Miele now has 130 career AHL points (45 goals, 85 assists), putting him 17th all-time in Pirates history, and leads the Pirates this season with 23 points (10 goals, 13 assists).
The Pirates next game is Dec. 20 when they continue their VIP Cup Series when they travel to Manchester to take on the Monarchs. Friday's game can be heard on the Pirates flagship stations WPEI 95.5/95.9 FM as well as WEZR AM 1240 in the Lewiston/Auburn area and WTME AM 780/1450 in Oxford County. The game can also be heard online at portlandpirates.com by clicking "Listen Live" and can be seen live on AHL Live at ahllive.com . The pregame show starts at 6:40 with Jeff Mannix.
