Portland Pirates News Release

Lewiston, ME - The Pirates return home Saturday night to face the Worcester Sharks for the annual Teddy Bear Toss. Puck drops at 7 pm as the Pirates look to continue their 4 game point streak while hosting the Sharks for the third time this season.

The Pirates were defeated by the Providence Bruins 4-3 in a shootout last night, their third straight game against Providence. Daine Todd score in his second straight game for the Pirates and Keven Veilleux scored his first goal for the Pirates, but it was not enough as Alex Fallstrom scored the game tying goal with 29 seconds left in regulation and the shootout winner in the second shootout frame. Louis Domingue picked up his first AHL defeat after beating the Bruins in his previous three career starts. Chris Brown had the other Pirates goal, his fifth of the year. Both Veilleux and Brown had power play goals for the Pirates, while the Pirates penalty kill had a perfect night after killing all 4 Providence power plays.

The Sharks had a 6 game point streak snapped last night by the Manchester Monarchs in a 3-1 defeat. Danill Tarasov had the lone Sharks goal while Manchester's AJ Gale scored twice. Troy Grosenick made 22 saves for the Sharks in the loss while the Monarch's JF Berube made 39 saves for Manchester.

The Pirates and Sharks last played on December 8th at the DCU Center, where Worcester beat the Pirates 8-2. Gilbert Brule and Brendan Shinnimin had the Pirates goals while both Mark Visentin and Mike Lee allowed 4 goals to the Sharks' offense.

KeyBank Key to the Game

Hybrid Helpers: The Pirates have two players that have played both forward and defense this season in Mark Louis and Daine Todd. Todd is on a 2 game goal scoring streak and has the second most defensive points at 9. The versatility of Louis and Todd will be needed tonight as the Pirates look to prevent the Sharks from getting good looks on goal while attempting to provide the Pirates with an offensive outburst and the all-important teddy bear goal.

Tonight is the annual Teddy Bear Toss and First Responders night presented by Central Maine Medical Center. Fans are encouraged to bring a new stuffed animal to the game - when the Pirates score their first goal, fans can throw their bears on the ice and all the bears will be donated to Lewiston/Auburn first responders for use in times of crisis. Last year, the Pirates faced the Sharks on Teddy Bear Toss night on November 30th, with David Rundblad, now with the Phoenix Coyotes, getting the Teddy Bear Goal.

The Pirates' food drive to benefit Good Shepherd Food Bank will continue as well. Pirates fans who bring a canned or non-perishable food item to the game will receive a pair of tickets to an upcoming January Pirates game.

Tonight's game can be heard on the Pirates flagship stations WPEI 95.5/95.9 FM as well as WEZR AM 1240 in the Lewiston/Auburn area and WTME AM 780/1450 in Oxford County.
