Saint John Sea Dogs News Release

SAINT JOHN - The Val-d'Or Foreurs erased a two-goal deficit with four unanswered goals between the second and third periods, and went on to defeat the Saint John Sea Dogs 5-3 in Quebec Major Junior Hockey League action Friday at Harbour Station.

Anthony Beauregard, Phil Pietroniro, Anthony Mantha, Nicolas Aube-Kubel and Guillaume Gelinas tallied for the Foreurs (17-11-0-0), which won its second straight game.

Kelly Bent, Mackenzie Brown and Matthew Highmore found the net for Saint John (7-19-0-3), which have lost three straight games to Val-d'Or, dating back to last season.

The league's leading point-getter had the best chance of a scoreless first period.

Anthony Mantha, a 2013 first-round draft pick of the Detroit Red Wings, was sent in on a partial breakaway on the right wing side. The big winger drove to the goal and was able to get a one-handed shot away while crashing into Antoine Landry, but the Sea Dogs' starting goalie held it out.

Val-d'Or held a 15-2 shot edge after the first period despite the teams spending similar amounts of time in their respective offensive zones.

The Foreurs opened the scoring on a power play eight minutes into the second period.

Defenceman Maxime Gravel fired a slap shot from the middle of the point that missed the net and bounced back in front to a wide-open Beauregard, and the rookie forward snapped it home.

Saint John tied it 55 seconds later when Jurij Repe drove the net on the right side and spun the puck in front. Bent was able to backhand it through the legs of Foruers' goalie Keven Bouchard.

The Sea Dogs, dressed in their black third jerseys for the first time this season, took the lead just over a minute after that.

Oliver Cooper snapped a low shot from close range on the left wing side of the goal line that Bouchard stopped, but Brown was able to chip in the rebound to make it 2-1 in favour of Saint John.

The Sea Dogs opened up a two-goal advantage on a power play with just over five minutes left in the second.

Olivier LeBlanc's shot from the left point was deflected on goal by Cooper. Bouchard could not find it before Highmore forced it underneath the goaltender and over the goal line.

The Foreurs struck back on a man advantage of their own a little over a minute later.

Standing on the left wing faceoff dot in the Sea Dogs' zone, Pietroniro steadied a cross-ice pass with his skate and snapped a wrister through the legs of Landry.

Saint John led 3-2 after two periods despite being outshot in the second frame 13-8.

Mantha tied the match less than five minutes into the third, using a backhand shot along the ice after an inital shot from the slot was blocked.

The Foreurs took the lead for good just past the seven-minute mark.

Aube-Kubel carried the puck from the right wing corner in behind the net and came out with a wide wraparound to Landry's right that beat the goaltender inside the far post.

The 17-year-old Landry, who was making his first start at home, made his best save of the night with about 7 minutes to go.

The speedy Mantha got behind the Saint John defence for a showdown with the goalie, but the Caraquet-native Landry stoned the 19-year-old's backhand deke with his left foot.

Val-d'Or added an insurance goal with less than five minutes left on a 4-on-2 rush.

Gelinas, the trailer on the play, took a pass in the high slot and fired a wrist shot through Landry's legs to make it 5-3.

The Sea Dogs were outshot 19-11 in the third period and 47-21 on the night.

Bouchard earned his seventh win with 18 saves.

Landry took the loss with 42 stops in front of 2,847 fans in attendance.

The Sea Dogs next game is Saturday, November 30th, at 7 p.m. against the Rouyn-Noranda Huskies at Harbour Station. It's the final game of the MOvember Challenge, and it's Female Hockey Night. There will also be a guaranteed 50/50 jackpot of $5,000.
