Former Sea Dogs Coach Gerard Gallant Headed to QMJHL Hall of Fame

BOUCHERVILLE, PQ - The Quebec Major Junior Hockey League has announced former Saint John Sea Dogs head coach Gerard Gallant will be among four men inducted into the QMJHL Hall of Fame in 2014.
The 50-year-old native of Summerside, P.E.I., coached the Sea Dogs for three seasons between 2009 and 2012 guiding the team to three Jean-Rougeau Trophies as the league's regular season champions, two President Cup titles in 2011 and 2012 as the playoff champions, and the 2011 MasterCard Memorial Cup championship.
Gallant won the Ron-Lapointe Trophy as coach of the year for the 2009-2010 and 2010-2011 seasons. With a record of 159-33-2-7, he maintains the top career winning percentage of any coach in QMJHL history at .791.
"We are extremely proud of Gerard," said Sea Dogs' President Wayne Long. "His hard work behind the bench was a big reason for the Sea Dogs' success during his time here. He is a true professional and is very deserving of this honour."
Gallant spent three seasons as a player with the Sherbrooke/St-Jean Castors and Verdun Juniors beginning in 1980, tallying 129 goals and 321 points in 188 regular season games. He won the President Cup with Sherbrooke (1982) and Verdun (1983).
He is the only person is QMJHL history to win four President Cups in a combined role as a player (2) and head coach (2).
Gallant played parts of eleven seasons in the National Hockey League with the Detroit Red Wings and Tampa Bay Lightning.
He is currently an assistant coach with the Montreal Canadiens.
Gallant is joined in the Hall of Fame Class of 2014 by Jean-Luc Phaneuf, Normand Caisse, and Patrice Brisebois. A ceremony is scheduled for April 2, 2014.
