Portland Pirates News Release

Lewiston, ME - Four different Pirates scored goals while Mark Visentin made 24 saves to record the team's third straight win in front of a sellout crowd of 3,743 at the Androscoggin Bank Colisée.

The Pirates started the game by putting pressure on Manchester early and often. After putting constant pressure on the visiting team, the Pirates were able to finally put one in the back of the net 7:04 into the first. As the Monarchs tried to break out of their zone, Lucas Lessio got his stick on the pass at center ice, knocking the puck onto Brendan Shinnimin's stick. Shinnimin found a streaking Brule who split the Manchester defense and rocketed a wrister past Jean-Francois Berube to give the Pirates the 1-0 lead.

The Pirates continued their pressure and extended their lead to two just before the halfway mark in the first. Brett Hextall won a puck along the right boards, turned and fed a beautiful saucer pass onto the stick of Randy Jones. Jones tried to squeeze a pass back into the middle but caught a Manchester skate, deflecting the puck into the net.

In the second, Tobias Rieder continued his hot start to the season, notching his fifth goal of the season and his third on the power play. About midway through the period, as Maxim Kitsyn sat in the box for hooking, Brandon Gormley took a shot from the point that Berube saved but was unable to corral. Rieder jumped on the loose puck and deposited it into the Manchester cage to make the score 3-0 Pirates.

The Monarchs were finally able to get on the scoreboard at 8:04 in the third period. After a neutral zone draw, Zach O'Brien found Scott Sabourin who skated past the Portland defense and snapped a shot past Visentin, cutting the Pirates lead down to two.

The Pirates wasted little time recapturing the three-goal lead, though, as Chris Summers scored his first of the year at the 15:02 mark. As the Pirates power play expired, Summers received a pass near the left boards, walked the blue line and found a hole above Berube's blocker, effectively sealing the win for the Pirates.

The Pirates and Monarchs each have one win in the VIP Cup Series, presented by VIP Tires and Service, an annual series between Portland and Manchester. The two teams will continue their series Dec. 7 in Lewiston.

The Pirates have a quick turnaround as they will host the Springfield Falcons (9-3-0-1) at home Saturday night for their second game of a three-game weekend. Puck drops at 7 PM. Tickets are available for tomorrow's game by calling the Colisee Box Office at 783-2009 ext. 525 or online at the colisee.com.
