Duluth Signs Florida Southern PairNovember 11, 2013 - Northwoods League (Northwoods) Duluth Huskies
Joining the Huskies for the 2014 campaign are Cameron (Jake) Popovich and Dominic Brugnoni. Popovich, who is originally from Danville, Calif., began his collegiate career at the University of San Francisco where he redshirted as a freshman in 2012, before playing last season at Marin Community College. In his lone season with the Mariners in 2013, Popovich threw a total of 26 innings and limited hitters to a .267 batting average. This summer, he played for the Boca Raton Lightning of the South Florida Collegiate Baseball League. He made five starts and posted a 1-1 record with a 2.52 ERA, which was among the league leaders. In 26 innings of work, Popovich, who stands 6-foot-4, recorded 23 strikeouts and walked just nine and allowed just 17 hits.
Moccasin Head Coach Lance Niekro said, "Jake is a big, strong righthanded pitcher with a very good arm. He throws in the upper 80's with good secondary stuff," Niekro said. "We're looking for Jake to be a dominant force in our starting rotation next season."
Brugnoni hails from St. Clair Shores, MI. The 6'2 200 lb Outfielder played this past summer in the Prospect League with the Chillicothe (Ohio) Paints batting .277 in 39 games with 141 at bats. In his first season with Mocs in 2013, Brugnoni hit .291 in 36 games, including making 33 starts. He finished the season with 37 hits, scored 16 runs, hit three doubles, three home runs and had 19 RBIs.
