Manchester Monarchs News Release

ST. JOHN'S, NF - The Manchester Monarchs fell to the St. John's IceCaps, 5-2, as center Eric O'Dell scored a goal and two assists at Mile One Centre on Friday night.

Manchester (8-2-1-2) leads the Atlantic Division with 19 points. St. John's (6-6-1-0) is ranked second in the Atlantic Division with 13 points.

"Tonight's game, far and away, was our worst effort by a country mile," said Head Coach Mark Morris. "St. John's was sharper and more ready to compete. They made the most of their chances. Give them credit, they worked. On the flipside, we lost puck battle after puck battle. We were slow afoot; we took bad penalties; lost most of our draws; missed assignments; missed the net; got shots blocked. We looked sluggish and slow to pucks right from the start. We'll need to press the reset button and come ready to play. This type of effort is a far cry from the games we've played thus far. Our video session tomorrow morning is not going to be a whole lot of fun."

Right wing Blair Riley picked up his first tally of the season at 7:42 of the second period. On a delayed penalty call, defenseman Ben Chiarot kept the puck inside the Monarchs blueline and handed it over to center John Albert. The center quickly sent the puck over to Riley between the hash marks. With traffic in front of Monarchs goaltender Martin Jones, Riley fired a shot into the back of the net to bring the score to 3-0.

The IceCaps struck first as left wing Jason Jaffray scored his sixth goal of the season at 1:35 of the first period. Center Kyle MacKinnon won the face-off in the left circle of the Monarchs zone. Defenseman Julian Melchiori received the face-off win pass at the left point and sent a slap shot in on Jones. Jaffray got his stick on Melchiori's shot and deflected it into the back of the net for the early 1-0 lead.

Albert doubled the IceCaps lead to 2-0 at 14:40 of the first period with his third tally of the season. Skating on the power play, right wing J.C. Lipon sent the puck from the left wing half wall to O'Dell below the end red line. O'Dell found Albert in the left wing face-off circle for a one-timer that beat Jones.

Defenseman Nick Deslauriers ended IceCaps goaltender Eddie Pasquale shutout bid with his fifth tally of the season at 3:19 of the third period. Defenseman Colin Miller battled with an IceCaps player along the left wing half wall and the puck popped free into the left face-off circle. Deslauriers grabbed the loose puck and snapped a wrist shot into the net.

Left wing Kael Mouillierat gave St. John's a three-goal lead back with his second tally of the season at 9:57 of the third period. Melchiori shot the puck on net from the left wing half wall. Jones made the save and the rebound popped to O'Dell who sent the puck over to Mouillierat who was positioned along the right doorstep. Mouillierat ripped a one-timer past Jones' glove to give the IceCaps a 4-1 advantage.

O'Dell extended the IceCaps lead to 5-1 at the 15-minute mark of the third period. Mouillierat stopped a clearing pass by the Monarchs and the puck bounced over to O'Dell in the right face-off circle. The center chopped at the loose puck and sent a fluttering shot in on Jones for his seventh goal of the season.

The Monarchs finished the game with a power play goal at 17:45 of the final frame. Center Jordan Weal carried the puck over the IceCaps blueline along the left wing wall. Weal sent a pass over to right wing Scott Sabourin in the right face-off circle for a one-timer that beat Pasquale for his first goal of the season.

Jones (8-2-2) took his second loss of the season stopping 27 out of 32 shots. Pasquale (6-5-0) earned his sixth win of the season making 28 saves on 30 shots.

Manchester was 1-for-8 on the power play. St. John's went 1-for-5 with the man advantage.
