Delmas Shines But Gladiators Fall 3-1

NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. - Peter Delmas stood on his head for most of the night, but despite plenty of chances on the Stingray net the Gwinnett Gladiators fell 3-1 Saturday night at North Charleston Coliseum.
The Canadiens goaltending prospect assigned to Gwinnett on Friday made 26 saves, including a crazy highlight reel glove save on a Chad Painchaud scoring chance in the second period. His counterpart, however, was equally brilliant as former Gladiator Jeff Jakaitis made 36 saves on 37 shots. Jakaitis also benefited from plenty of luck in the third period.
Heading into the final stanza tied at one, Gwinnett (1-6) jumped allover the Rays (6-0-0-1) for much of the third. Despite outshooting the Rays13-8 though and hitting two posts, the Gladiators were unable to solve Jakaitis. South Carolina then capitalized on a power play, with Marc Hagel blasting a one-time past Delmas to put the Rays up for good at 15:28. The goal came after a controversial non-call, as Evan Bloodoff was brought down on ashorthanded chance the other direction prior to South Carolina's game-winner.
Scott Campbell extended his goal-scoring streak to six games with anempty-netter in the closing seconds, and Gwinnett suffered another hard luck loss at the hands of the Rays.
Gwinnett's power play dropped to 0-for-22 on the road this season, failing to capitalize on seven opportunities Saturday, including an extended five-on-three in the third.
The lone goal of the first period came on the Rays first shot. Former Gladiator forward Igor Gongalsky slipped a wrist shot past Delmas on the short side 3:28 into the game for a 1-0 South Carolina edge.
It didn't take long for the Gladiators to tie the game in the second period. Philippe Halley buried his second of the season off a rebound in front just 46 seconds into the middle stanza with Dirk Southern and Keven Veilleux assisting. Despite several golden opportunities for each side, including a couple highlight reel saves by Delmas, the score stayed at 1-1 through 40 minutes.
