Saint John Sea Dogs News Release

SAINT JOHN - The Moncton Wildcats scored five unanswered goals - four in the third period - to upend the Saint John Sea Dogs, 6-2, in Quebec Major Junior Hockey League action Friday at Harbour Station.

Spencer Smallman and Oliver Cooper scored for Saint John (5-11-0-2), which have now lost nine consecutive games.

J.C. Campagna led the Moncton (8-11-0-1) offence with two goals and an assist. Mathieu Olivier, Christophe Lalonde, Ivan Barbashev and Garrett Johnston also tallied for the Wildcats, which snapped a three-game skid.

It was Saint John's first game under new Head Coach and Co-General Manager Ross Yates.

A full game summary can be found HERE.

The Sea Dogs had a good scoring chance early in the first when Smallman was found alone in the low slot, but Moncton goalie Alex Dubeau made quick work of a snapshot from the second-year Saint John forward.

The Wildcats struck first nearly six minutes into the game.

During a rush into the Saint John zone, Olivier pounced on a loose puck on the right wing side and fired a hard wrister past Sea Dogs' goalie Sebastien Auger's blocker for his first career QMJHL goal.

Smallman tied it on a power play less than two minutes later.

Rookie Nathan Noel fed a pass from the right corner into the slot, where Smallman stepped to his left and beat Dubeau with a shot inside the right post.

The Dogs took the lead on another power play eight minutes into the second - this time with help from Dubeau.

The 19-year-old keeper came out of his goal to play a shoot-in behind the net and fed a pass to his left, right onto the stick of Cooper, who rifled it underneath the crossbar and inside the right post to give the Sea Dogs a 2-1 advantage.

Campagna evened the game again with less than seven minutes left in the second.

The puck squirted in front of the net from the right wing corner and Campagna, the native of Dallas, Texas, made a quick deke and slid a shot past Auger.

The game remained tied 2-2 after forty minutes. Moncton took over offensively in the third.

Lalonde gave the Wildcats the lead again just 63 seconds into the final frame with Moncton shorthanded.

Lalonde, 19, executed and give-and-go with teammate Stephen Johnson inside the Sea Dogs' zone and snapped a shot on Auger. The goalie made the save, face-down, coming left-to-right, but ended up kicking the puck from under his left pad into his own net to give Moncton a 3-2 edge.

Then the power play kicked in for the Wildcats.

Just over six minutes into the third, Barbashev snapped a cross-crease pass under the crossbar to Auger's left.

Three minutes later, in the final second of another man advantage, Campagna made it 5-2 by rifling a wrist shot past Auger's blocker after a clean faceoff win to the goalie's left.

Johnston wrapped up the scoring in the final minute on a 2-on-1, taking a pass in front of the Saint John net from the right side, and then toe-dragging the puck past Auger before snapping it inside the left post for a 6-2 Moncton win.

The Wildcats outshot Saint John 42-28.

Dubeau made 26 saves to earn the win for Moncton.

Auger was tagged with the loss in a 36-save performance in front of 3,089 fans in attendance.

With the win, the Wildcats also take a 2-1 lead in the Brunswick News Rivalry Cup standings.

The Sea Dogs' next game is Saturday, November 2nd, at 7 p.m. against the Charlottetown Islanders at Harbour Station. It's "Support Our Troops Night," with several members of Canadian Forces scheduled to be in attendance. A pre-game ceremony will be held recognizing members of Canada's military.
