Saint John Sea Dogs News Release

BAIE-COMEAU, PQ - Gabryel Boudreau's power play goal early in the second period turned into the game winner, as the Baie-Comeau Drakkar held on to defeat the Saint John Sea Dogs 2-1 in Quebec Major Junior Hockey League action Friday at Centre Henry-Leonard.

Joey Richard scored the lone goal for Saint John (5-10-0-1), which have now lost seven straight games.

Alec Jon Banville netted the other goal for the Drakkar (11-4-0-2), which picked up their sixth consecutive victory on "Pink in the Rink" night in Baie-Comeau.

Scoring chances were limited early in the game.

Matthew Highmore gave the Dogs their first opportunity, blasting a slap shot from the right wing that Drakkar goalie Philippe Cadorette turned away with his right pad.

Baie-Comeau found the net first just over nine minutes in.

Frederic Gamelin won a race to a dump-in in the right wing corner and found a wide-open Banville, who chipped it over the blocking arm of Sebastien Auger in the Sea Dog goal.

The 19-year-old Saint John netminder took a golden opportunity away from the Drakkar just a couple of minutes later when an errant Sea Dog pass rolled into the slot. Alexandre Ranger stepped into a one-timer, but Auger made a left pad stop.

With about five minutes left in the period, Baie-Comeau's Charles Poulin broke in from the left side and cut across the crease, where Auger stymied the third-year Drakkar forward with a left pad save.

Saint John trailed 1-0 after one period.

Boudreau's power play goal came just under four minutes into the middle frame.

Drakkar defenceman Dominic Poulin weaved into the Saint John zone and sent a pass from the right circle into the low slot. The feed deflected off a Sea Dog defenceman to Boudreau near the left side of the crease, and he tucked it inside the right post to make it 2-0.

The Sea Dogs enjoyed a 5-on-3 man advantage for 43 seconds a short time later.

Just as one penalty expired, a scramble ensued in front of Cadorette, with Saint John's Michael Abbott taking a couple of hacks at a bouncing puck before it was eventually scooped up by the goaltender near the left post.

Drakkar captain Felix Girard was assessed a five-minute check-to-the-head penalty and a game misconduct as time expired in the second period following a heavy hit on Sea Dogs' winger Noah Zilbert in the final seconds.

Zilbert did return to action.

Saint John could not capitalize on the ensuing power play which opened the third period.

Auger had to be solid again eight minutes into the third.

During a 3-on-2 rush for the Drakkar, Banville snuck in to create an open shot, but Auger denied him with his left arm and smothered the rebound.

Auger went to the bench for an extra attacker with less than thirty seconds left in regulation time. Saint John could not generate a tying goal.

Baie-Comeau outshot Saint John 32-23 in front of 2,447 fans.

Auger was named first star with thirty stops.

Cadorette earned the win with 22 saves for the Drakkar.
