Saint John Sea Dogs News Release

SAINT JOHN, N.B. - Spencer Smallman was the only Saint John Sea Dog to find the net in a 2-1 loss to the Chicoutimi Sagueneens in Quebec Major Junior Hockey League action Sunday at Harbour Station.

The Sea Dogs (5-8-0-1) have now lost five straight games.

Chicoutimi (8-8-0-0) got goals from Laurent Dauphin and Jeremy Bouchard.

Saint John made Sags' goalie Julio Billia work early on.

Near the five-minute mark, forward Kelly Bent skated in on the right side and fired a backhand shot that Billia caught with his glove hand.

The 17-year-old native of St-Leonard, Quebec, also made a right pad save on a point shot from Olivier LeBlanc that was deflected by Connor Donaghey in the slot.

The Dogs opened the scoring nearly eleven minutes into the first on a power play after a clean faceoff win to Billia's left.

From the right wing boards, Nathan Noel found Smallman in the slot, and the former Fredericton midget AAA star snapped a low shot that beat Billia inside the right post.

Chicoutimi got that one back just over four minutes later while enjoying a two-man advantage.

Charles Hudon hammered a slap-pass from the middle of the point to Dauphin, who angled his stick to deflect the pass behind a helpless Sebastien Auger in the Sea Dogs' goal.

The second period featured fisticuffs between two of the top three draft picks in the QMJHL draft.

Saint John's Nathan Noel (3rd overall) and Chicoutimi's Nicolas Roy (1st overall) squared off with about eight minutes to go in the period.

The Sagueneens netted the eventual game winner a couple of minutes later.

Sebastien Sylvestre recovered a loose puck at the Saint John blueline and tapped it over to the right side where the rookie forward Bouchard sent a hard wrist shot over the glove of Auger, off the left post and in.

Saint John had a chance to tie it a short time later, but Stephen Anderson was denied by Billia on a point-blank chance.

Auger kept the score at 2-1 in the final two minutes of the period when the speedy Sylvestre raced in on the right wing and ripped a wrister that Auger deflected wide with his blocking arm.

Saint John pressed for the equalizer late in the third period, but came up short.

With less than three minutes left, Billia stopped a wide-open shot from Sea Dogs' rookie blueliner Thomas Chabot in the slot.

The Sea Dogs pulled Auger for an extra attacker with 45 seconds left.

Saint John's best chance to score came on a Michael Abbott point shot that Billia took in the chest and held.

Billia earned the win in goal with 33 saves before a crowd of 2,788.

Auger made 31 stops in a losing cause for Saint John.

Also of note for the Sea Dogs, Jurij Repe made his season debut after missing the first 13 games of the season due to injury. The Slovenian defenceman registered one hit and a -1 rating.

The Sea Dogs' travel to Drummondville to take on the Voltigeurs Wednesday, October 23rd, at 8 p.m. Catch all the action LIVE on News88.9 FM. Watch LIVE online with TELUS (fee applies).
