COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - USA Hockey is a significant contributor in the staging of this week's Mayo Clinic Ice Hockey Summit II: Action on Concussions and is also a founding partner of a new coalition tabbed the National Sports Concussion Coalition.

"We've always had safety as our top priority," said Dave Ogrean, executive director of USA Hockey, "and the Concussion Summit and National Sports Concussion Coalition are the most recent activities we're engaged in as part of our ongoing effort to foster the safest possible environment for all participants."

The Mayo Clinic Ice Hockey Summit II, led by Dr. Michael Stuart, chief medical officer of USA Hockey and co-director of the Mayo Clinic Sports Medicine Center, will take place Tuesday and Wednesday (Oct. 8-9) in Rochester, Minn. The summit will bring together top scientists, trainers, coaches, officials, retired professional players and manufacturers from across the United States, Canada and Europe to discuss concussion-related issues, including the science of concussion, impact on youth athletes and hockey community response. The Mayo Clinic Sports Medicine Center is facilitating the conference with support from USA Hockey, the Brian Mark Family Foundation, Ontario Neurotrauma Foundation and International Ice Hockey Federation. Participants will use #mayoconcussion on Twitter for an on-going dialogue during the Summit.

The National Sports Concussion Coalition is a partnership between a number of the nation's most prominent youth sports organizations, along with concussion specialists, sports medicine professionals and leaders at other levels of sports, focused on preventing and managing concussions among youth athletes. The Coalition expects to be the most comprehensive alliance of its kind, with science and medical leaders in the fields of concussions, brain injury and sports medicine working directly with a cross-section of organizations and governing bodies that represent millions of athletes across major organized sports in the United States.

USA Hockey has long been a leader in safety among youth sports entities. Most recently, the organization introduced USA Hockey SafeSport, a re-purposing of its off-ice safety program that includes long-standing policies and procedures to protect children as well as significant enhancements, notably a nationwide reporting procedure for inappropriate conduct.
