Saint John Sea Dogs News Release

SYDNEY, N.S. - The Cape Breton Screaming Eagles scored three times in the second period and held on to defeat the Saint John Sea Dogs 5-3 in Quebec Major Junior Hockey League action Friday at Centre 200.

Will Thompson, Stephen Anderson and Nathan Noel scored for Saint John (4-3-0-1), which lost for the first time in three games.

The Eagles (4-2-0-2) have now won four of their last five, and jumped ahead of the Sea Dogs into second place in the Maritimes Division.

Saint John goalie Sebastien Auger, who was making his sixth straight start, was busy early.

The CHL goaltender of the month for September stoned Eagles' forward Kyle Farrell with his blocker on a point-blank chance in front of the net about six minutes into the first period.

The Sea Dogs' red-hot power play struck to open the scoring just before the nine-minute mark.

Noel won the draw straight back to Thompson at the centre of the point. The Fredericton-native fired a hard wrist shot that deflected off a Cape Breton stick past goalie Maxime Lagace for his first QMJHL goal.

Anderson scored another goal on the man advantage - the Sea Dogs' eighth power play goal in the previous 14 opportunities - a little over twelve minutes in.

An initial shot by Matthew Highmore deflected wide to the left wing side before Oliver Cooper found Anderson with a short pass near the bottom of the circle. The Charlottetown-born forward snapped it over the blocker of Lagace to make it 2-0.

The Eagles got one back before the end of the frame on a man advantage of their own.

St. Louis Blues prospect William Carrier blasted a hard shot from the top of the right circle that was stopped by Auger, but the rebound deflected off the skate of Cape Breton's Cameron Darcy and underneath the goaltender, into the net.

The play was reviewed and the goal stood. Saint John led 2-1 after one period.

The Eagles tied the game less than four minutes into the second when Petit-Rocher, N.B., native Justin Hache threw a pass from the left wing in front and saw it deflect past Auger on the short side. Julien Pelletier was eventually credited with the goal.

Cape Breton took the lead before the nine-minute mark.

Just as one Sea Dog returned to the ice following a 5-on-3, Jeremy Beaudry found a loose puck in the slot and rifled a wrist shot past Auger's glove to make it a 3-2 game.

Less than ninety seconds later, rookie forward Nicholas Dozzi capped a three-goal middle frame by chipping in a cross-crease pass to extend the Cape Breton lead to 4-2.

Saint John got a power play early in the third, but Lagace kept the Sea Dogs at bay.

The best chance came late in the man advantage when Lagace denied an Anderson shot with his left pad while he was face down in the crease.

An aggressive forecheck helped Saint John get back within a goal with about twelve minutes to go.

After the Sea Dogs gained possession of a loose puck on the right side, Spencer Smallman spotted Connor Donaghey wide open in front of Lagace. The 19-year-old Donaghey teed up fellow St. John's native Noel, who roofed a shot past the goalie's blocker hand.

Auger kept the deficit at one with about five minutes left in the third after robbing Charles-Eric Legare from in close.

Eagles winger Raphael Corriveau finished off the scoring into an empty net with 28.1 seconds left.

Auger was named third star with 26 saves. It's the fifth time in his six games played that the 19-year-old keeper has been named a game star.

Lagace earned the win for Cape Breton with 23 stops in front of 2,806 fans.
