Daytona Tortugas News Release

Port Charlotte, FL - The Daytona Cubs secured the 2013 Florida State League Championship with a 4-0 one-hit win over the Charlotte Stone Crabs on Monday at Charlotte Sports Park.

"What a great year this has been for this team," Cubs Manager Dave Keller said. "Everyone worked together to get better each day and the atmosphere was incredible."

RHP C.J. Edwards (W, 2-0) tossed five one-hit innings and RHP Ryan Searle (S, 2) followed Edwards with four perfect innings of relief to give Daytona its sixth FSL title and second in the last three years.

"Tonight I went out and said I was going to leave it all on the field," Edwards said. "All I wanted to do is give my team the best chance to win."

Daytona plated a run in the first inning for the fifth time in six postseason games with an RBI single by DH Dan Vogelbach.

RF Pin-Chieh Chen led off the first with a single and advanced to second on a 1B Dustin Geiger single. With one out, Vogelbach lined an opposite-field single to left, and after a terrific slide around the tag of Stone Crabs catcher Jake DePew, Chen scored the first run of the game.

Vogelbach plated a first inning run in each of the last three Championship Series games.

The Cubs increased their lead to 3-0 in the second on three-straight singles. LF Anthony Giansanti, C Chadd Krist and 2B West Darvill all singled, and with the help of two errors by left-fielder Jonathan Quinonez, the Cubs plated two runs to triple their lead.

Edwards, who threw five no-hit innings in the FSL North series-clincher against Dunedin, allowed the one single with two walks and three strikeouts. The Prosperity, SC native did not allow a run on the road over 20 innings this season and finished with a 1.36 ERA for the Cubs after being acquired from the Texas Rangers as a part of the Matt Garza trade.

"I couldn't have been traded to a better team," Edwards said. "I love to win and this team loves to win as much as I do."

Searle pitched behind Edwards in both playoff appearances and threw eight shutout innings in the postseason while surrendering two total hits.

SS Elliot Soto dazzled fans with his defense throughout the season and made two fantastic defensive plays, including the game-ender, on Monday.

"I think the most important thing I can bring to the team is defense," Soto said. "Defense wins championships and the most important thing you can do for your pitchers and your team is play good defense."

Daytona added a run in the ninth on an RBI single by Soto to increase their lead to 4-0.

The Cubs finished the season having won 16 of their final 18 games. Daytona has won FSL Championships in 1995, 2000, 2004, 2008, 2011 and 2013. With the win, the Cubs finished the season at 80-52.
