Hudson Valley Renegades News Release

ABERDEEN, MD - In any playoff race, the margin of error shrinks over time until there's no wiggle room for mistakes. With five games remaining in their schedule and a two game deficit in the McNamara Division, the Renegades needed everything and then some to go on a late run. Despite putting the winning run at third base in two separate innings in extras, the offense couldn't provide that one swing that could very well carry them into the postseason. Instead, Saturday night's 6-2 loss to Staten Island will be remembered for the game-winning two run single by Daniel Lopez, and a pair of errors that brought two more runs in on the same play. With one swing and the bases loaded, Lopez cleared the bases, broke the tie, and shocked the 4,928 at Dutchess Stadium.

A pitcher's duel between Eli Echarry and Yankees newcomer Chaz Hebert carried a scoreless tie into the fourth inning. After striking out Eric Jagielo, Echarry walked Mike Ford before fanning Yeicok Calderon for the second out. Bubba Jones continued his strong season against Hudson Valley with a well-struck RBI double to the gap in right center that put the Yanks ahead 1-0.

The lead held in the bottom of the sixth until the Renegades turned the tide following a leadoff bunt single by James Harris and a base hit from John Alexander. Julian Ridings scored both runners in with a triple to right center that brought the crowd to life and gave the 'Gades a 2-1 lead. Darryl George grounded out and Ariel Soriano reached on catcher's interference to put runners at the corners with one out. Johnny Field struck out before Hebert threw back to first with Soriano trying to steal second base. The rundown brought Ridings to the plate, but he was thrown out by the shortstop Abiatal Avelino in a vicious collision with catcher Trent Garrison for the third out.

With runners at second and third and one out in the eighth, Staten Island tied the game at two on an RBI groundout from Jagielo. In the bottom of the 10th, George smacked a two out double to right center and moved to third on a wild pitch from Andy Beresford. But the Yankees reliever struck out Soriano to retire the side. With one more chance in the 11th, Ty Young grounded a one out double down the left field line. He then got a great jump on the pitcher Andury Acevedo, and easily stole third with Granden Goetzman at the plate. A groundout to first brought up Ryan McChesney, who ended the inning with a hard grounder to second.

Staten Island responded with two straight singles to lead off the 12th against Anthony Tzamtzis. Corey MacDonald entered from the bullpen to face Derek Toadvine, who reached on a bunt single to load the bases with nobody out. With the infield drawn in, Lopez grounded a single into center field to score Jones. Garrison was on his way to the plate, and Harris unloaded an errant throw that deflected off McChesney and rolled over towards the first base dugout. The Renegades catcher retrieved the loose ball but threw high over home plate in an attempt to get the third runner. In total, all four Yankees on base at the time would score, with the last two being unearned because of the two errors. The play deflated the Renegades and allowed Acevedo (1-0) to end the game with a perfect 12th inning.
