Modesto Nuts News Release

LAKE ELSINORE, CA (August 25th, 2013) -- Modesto tallied only six hits, but all of them went for doubles to take an early four-run lead, and that was plenty for Jon Gray and the Nuts bullpen as they went on to defeat the Storm 4-1 on Sunday night at The Diamond.

The streaking Nuts (70-62, 38-25) have now won all three games in Lake Elsinore with a chance for a four-game sweep tomorrow. Modesto has won 12 of their 13 overall to keep a three game lead atop the second-half North Division standings. Only eight games remain in the regular season.

Rockies' first-round pick Jon Gray (4-0) continued his assault on the California League with another brilliant performance. He faced the minimum through five innings, allowing just two hits and no walks. Gray racked up eighth strikeouts while throwing only 64 pitches. In five starts, he has allowed only 10 hits and two runs in 24 innings, while striking out half of his outs with 36.

Taylor Featherston led off the game with a double, and finished with two doubles and two runs batted in to pace the Nuts offense. After Trevor Story was hit by a pitch from Bryce Morrow in the first, Jared Simon followed with a 2-run double to make it 2-0.

In the fourth, Jordan Ribera reached on a fielding-error and Niko Gallego followed with a double to put two in scoring position. With two outs in the inning, Featherston delivered with a double to give Modesto a 4-0 advantage.

Nelson Gonzalez took over in the sixth, and worked two perfect frames before running into trouble in the eighth. A.J. Kirby-Jones led off with a single, and Jeremy Baltz doubled to put two in scoring position with no outs. Kyle Gaedele then hit a fly ball to left, with Simon throwing a laser to home plate to throw out Kirby-Jones who was trying to score.

Ryan Buch then took over from the bullpen and gave up an RBI single to Travis Whitmore, which got the Storm on the board. Buch returned for the ninth and worked a perfect inning to finish the game.

Modesto returns to Lake Elsinore on Monday night for their final road game of the regular season. RHP Chris Jensen (4-7, 4.52) will get the start, opposite RHP James Needy (8-5, 4.02) for the Storm. First pitch is set for 6:05 p.m.

The Nuts will return to John Thurman Field on Tuesday night to open a seven-game homestand to finish the season. Inland Empire visits for three, followed by a four-game set with Stockton. Tickets are available, and can be purchased by calling (209) 572-HITS.
