Rochester Red Wings News Release

Indianapolis Indians (76-59) @ Rochester Red Wings (72-63)

Frontier Field - Rochester, NY - 1:05 p.m.

LHP Kris Johnson (10-4, 2.41) vs. RHP Kyle Gibson (7-5, 3.01)

TODAY'S GAME: The Wild Card leading Red Wings look to snap their four-game losing streak and avoid the four-game sweep in the series finale with Indianapolis (Pittsburgh) on Sunday afternoon (1:05 p.m.) at Frontier Field... After starting their season-long, 10-game homestand with three straight wins, Rochester has dropped four in a row to fall out of first place and 1.5 GB of Pawtucket... Still, the Wings are 31-18 since their last four-game losing skid (6/28-7/2(1)) and have the 2nd-best record in the IL since May 27 with a 52-33 (.612) mark (DUR; 53-31) ... The Indians, owners of the second-best record in the IL, wrapped up their second consecutive West division title last night and will play the South division champion, Durham Bulls, in the opening round of the playoffs.

TODAY'S PROBABLES:

-GIBSON : Makes his 1st start back with ROC since being optioned on 8/19... Went 2-4, 6.53 ERA in 10 GS with the Twins -- including 0-2, 7.54 ERA over his last 5 GS... Over his last 7 GS at Triple-A, Gibson went 5-0 with a 2.20 ERA (12 ER/49.0 IP)... he allowed two-runs-or-less in 5 of those 7 GS and each of the 7 starts were at least 6.0 innings... Earned his first-ever ML promotion on 6/25.

-JOHNSON : Leads the IL ERA (2.41), ranks T-4th in BAA (.232) and 5th in W (10) & WHIP (1.16)... Hasn't allowed more than 4 runs in a game since 5/13 vs TOL (6.0 ip, 6h, 4r/er)... Is 2-0, 1.53 ERA in 5 GS after the All-Star Break... His last start was his first of the season with PIT vs ARI (L; 6.0 ip, 5h, 2r/er, 2bb, 5k)... Earned the win in lone start vs ROC this season on 6/25 (7.0ip, 3h, 2r/er)

WITH A WIN TODAY, THE WINGS... :

-Will top their win total from the 2012 season and assure themselves of a winning season for the first time since 2008 (74-70).

-Will avoid losing five straight games for the first time since a season-high 7-game skid April 11-17.

-Will avoid losing five straight at Frontier Field for the first time since July 26-August 8, 2012.

-Will avoid being swept at home in a 4-game series for the first time since 8/26-8/29/10 vs PAW and avoid being swept in a 4-game set by IND for the first time since 6/18-6/21/99 @ IND... As it is, this is the first series loss to IND at home since 2005.

MAGIC NUMBER : Despite last night's loss, the Red Wings Magic Number to clinch the Wild Card shrunk to 8 over Norfolk after the Tides were shutout by Durham, 3-0, Saturday night... Any combination of Wings wins and Tides losses that equal 8 will clinch a playoff berth for Rochester for the first time since 2006. The Wings own the season series tiebreaker over Norfolk (6-2) if they were to finish with the same record... NOR's remaining schedule is as follows: 1 @ DUR; 2 @ GWN; 3 @ CHA; 4 vs. DUR... PAW's remaining schedule is as follows: 3 vs. SWB; 4 vs. SYR; 2 @ LHV.

BRING BACK THE 'D': The Wings committed two errors in the third inning Saturday that led to five unearned runs against Logan Darnell and the Wings... Rochester has now made 15 errors over their last 8 games and 20 over their past 13 contests... Over the previous 29 games, the Wings committed just 9 errors including a season-high, 12-game, 114-inning stretch of errorless baseball from 7/21-8/1... The errors have led to 19 unearned runs over the past 10 games after allowing only 7 unearned runs over the previous 57 games... Still, despite the tough defensive stretch, the Wings have made the 3rd fewest errors in all of MiLB (behind Pawtucket, 86 and Mobile, 87) and have the 2nd best fielding percentage in the IL (.982).

-Still, the Wings are on pace to commit just 97 errors this season -- it would be their fewest since committing 93 in 2003.

FOR STARTERS: Despite starting the homestand 3-4, the Red Wings starting rotation has an ERA of 0.84 (4 ER/42.6 IP) over the first 7 games of the homestand... In this series, a Wings starter has yet to allow an earned run (0-2, 16.2 ip, 9 runs, 18 hits, 5 bb, 9k) ... Over their last 13 G, Wings starters have posted a 1.97 ERA (18 ER/82.1 IP) with 7 quality starts and have averaged 6.1 IP/GS.

WINGS ON WHEELS: The Red Wings have stolen 6 bases over the last 2 games and are now 23 for 25 in stolen bases this month... Their 118 stolen bases on the season is already the most for a Wings team since 2007 (123 SB) and ranks 5th in the IL this season... The Wings' 81% success rate (118-for-146) is best in the IL ... The Wings failed to reach 100 SB in each of the last four seasons and in 10 of the last 13 seasons ... With 6 more SB this season the Wings would have their most SB since 2001 (139 SB)... Antoan Richardson (23) and Eric Farris (22) are the first pair of Wings with 20-plus SB in one season since 2009 (Dustin Martin, 26 and Jason Pridie, 25).

MORE ABOUT LAST NIGHT:

-Virgil Vasquez (5.0ip, 4h, r/er, bb, 6k) tied a team-high with 5.0 innings of relief and set a team-high with 6 strikeouts in relief... Vasquez is now 2-1, 2.81 ERA (8 ER/25.2 IP) in his first 6 games (3 GS) back with Rochester since his promotion on 7/28.

-Jermaine Mitchell went 4-for-4 last night but the rest of the team went just 3-for-27... Mitchell now has a hit in 7 of his last 9 starts batting .405 (17-42) with a 2B, 3B, HR, 4 R & 4 RBI since August 6... He is 8-for-13 (.615) over last 3 starts on the homestand.

-Darin Mastroianni extended his hit streak to a current team-high 7 G hitting .375 (9-24) w/ a 2B, 5 R, 2RBI & 6 BB (.545 OBP).
