Pawtucket Red Sox News Release

MOOSIC, PA - The PawSox rallied to beat Scranton/Wilkes-Barre 5-4 in 10 innings to take three of four in the series at PNC Field in front of 9,595 fans.

Two consecutive flawless innings on offense took the PawSox and RailRiders to the 3rd inning where Pawtucket took advantage of a big Scranton/Wilkes-Barre mistake. Tony Thomas led off the frame with a double and Justin Henry rolled a ground ball to second base. RailRider second baseman Brent Lillibridge fired low and past first base allowing Thomas to score giving the PawSox a 1-0 lead.

PawSox starter Clayton Mortensen entered the contest with an August record of 2-0 with a 1.29 ERA, three earned runs over 20 innings, and he continued his dominance Saturday night. The right hander retired the first 11 batters he faced before issuing a two-out walk to Dan Johnson. He would get a ground ball to third to end the frame keeping Pawtucket ahead 1-0.

Mortensen did not allow a hit until there were two outs in the 5th inning.

RailRiders' starter Chris Bootcheck was equally as good going 6.2 strong frames allowing just three hits and walking a pair before departing in the 7th inning with runners at second and third. Lefty Cesar Cabral came in out of the bullpen and promptly allowed an RBI single to Jackie Bradley Jr. to put Pawtucket in front 2-0.

Mortensen would toss seven shutout innings allowing just three hits while striking out five.

The PawSox added another run in the 8th as Justin Henry drew a bases loaded walk to make it a 3-0 lead.

In the bottom of the 8th, Rubby De La Rosa entered out of the PawSox bullpen. He would allow a walk and a single with one out before Addison Maruszak drove home two with two outs to cut the lead to just 3-2.

Pawtucket added a crucial insurance run in the 9th as Brock Holt double and scored on a one-out RBI single by Ryan Lavarnway to grab a 4-2 lead.

Jose De La Torre began the 9th for Pawtucket and allowed back to back singles to start the inning. After a pair of ground outs had runners and second and third, the PawSox went to Anthony Carter out of the bullpen needing to get just one out. Neil Medchill, making his first start in Triple-A, would single up the middle scoring both runners to tie the game 4-4.

In the 10th, Justin Henry singled with one out. Heiker Meneses followed with a hit to left. Henry was aggressive taking third on the play, but the throw from left field caromed off of Henry into foul ground allowing him to score giving Pawtucket a 5-4 lead. Carter would retire the RailRiders in order to pick up the win.

The PawSox will continue their seven-game set with Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, but the venue will switch to McCoy Stadium for three games starting Sunday at 6:05pm. Pawtucket will send Anthony Ranaudo (2-1, 1.93) to the hill against Chase Whitley (3-2, 3.12) of the RailRiders.

The first 3,000 female fans coming to McCoy Stadium when the PawSox host the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders Sunday will receive a pink PawSox T-shirt courtesy of CVS Pharmacy & Coast 93.3.
