Altoona Curve Game Information: August 20, 2013August 20, 2013 - Eastern League (EL) - Altoona Curve Press Release
CURVE/FIGHTINS SERIES: This is the third and final time that the Curve and Fightin Phils will meet in 2013. Altoona was swept in the four-game series in Reading in late May while they took both games of the shortened two- game series here in Curve, Pa. in early June.
FOR ALTOONA: RHP David Bromberg returns to the mound tonight for the Curve coming off his best start of the season last time out when he blanked the Portland Sea Dogs on Thursday over eight innings while permitting just two hits and whiffing seven. The Santa Monica, Calif. native enters tonight's start with a 3.32 ERA (4th in EL) along with a .234 opponents batting average against (5th in EL and fourth-best among all league starters) while also leading the Curve in strikeouts at 114. In his only other start versus the Fightins this year, Bromberg allowed four unearned runs in 7.1 innings, punched out eight and did not walk a batter. For more on Bromberg, see page two.
FOR READING: Southpaw Ryan Demmin takes the mound for the Fightins on Tuesday and will be making his Read- ing debut after two stats with the Lakewood BlueClaws of the Low-A South Atlantic League. Demmin, 25, began this season pitching for the Normal CornBelters of the Frontier League (Independent). Demmin was 6-5 with a 2.20 ERA in 14 starts for the CornBelters while fanning 90 batters in 98.0 innings. He began his MiLB career as a non- drafted free agent signee of the Washington Nationals in 2010 and spent 2010-2012 in the Nationals' system. He made it as high as High-A Potomac where he was 1-2 wit a 4.57 ERA in 29 games primarily as a reliever. This will be his first ever start at the Double-A level.
BIG LEAGUE CHEW: Pittsburgh Pirates outfielder Travis Snider went 1-for-3 with a single and a run scored in his six innings on Monday night and is expected to continue his rehab assignment today. Snider, who has been on the dis- abled list since July 28 with left big toe discomfort, was hitting .219 with 12 doubles, two triples, three homers and 23 RBI in 95 games this season for Pittsburgh. He joins Chase d'Arnaud, Jared Hughes, Jeff Karstens, Francisco Liriano, James McDonald, Charlie Morton and Neil Walker on the list of Pirates that have made rehab stints with the Curve this season.
CLOSING TIME: All-Star third baseman Adalberto Santos was held of the bases in the first game of the doubleheader on Monday night to snap his on-base streak at 24 games, which is the second-longest streak by any Curve player this season. During the on-base streak, Santos hit .299 (26-for-87) with eight doubles, eight RBI, 12 runs scored and 14 walks. He aimed to start a new one with a double in the second game.
JUUUUSSTIN: Curve 1B Justin Howard has been on fire since the calendar read June 1. Howard has hit .365 (73- for-200) since the calendar flipped to June 1, which is the best average in all of Double-A for that time period. He has established a new career-high for homers in a season with eight this season after hitting two more on Saturday night in Erie during Game 1. It was also the first multi-homer effort for Howard in his professional career. For the season, Howard is hitting .337 with 11 doubles, a career-high eight homers and 35 RBI in 86 games played.
ALEXANDER THE REALLY REALLY GREAT: Alex Dickerson has been on a torrid pace since June 1, going 85-for- 259 (.328) with 23 doubles, one tripe, 12 home runs and 48 RBI in 69 games. His 15 home runs total are second on the team behind Jarek Cunningham's 16 while his 63 RBI lead the team. After picking up a pair of Eastern League Player of the Week awards in July, Dickerson was named the league's Player of the Month for July after bat- ting .413 with 10 doubles, six home runs 27 RBI and 23 runs scored in 26 games during the month.
BECAUSE HE KENN KENN KENN: Reliever Kenn Kasparek tossed an- other scoreless inning for the Curve on Sunday night in Erie to lower his season ERA to 3.50. It was the seventh straight scoreless appearance for Kasparek, who has not allowed a run since a game on July 4 vs. Erie (16.1 IP). In seven games since the break, Kasparek has given up just eight hits in 16.1 IP while striking out 12 and walking just four. He was 3-2 with a 5.02 ERA in 26 games (one start) before the break.
OUT ON THE TOWN: Reliever Jason Townsend made his first pro start on Saturday night in the second game of the doubleheader with Erie and with it came an end to his scoreless-innings streak. Townsend got through the first inning unscathed before allowing an unearned run in the second inning with two outs. That ended his scoreless innings streak at 17.2 in- nings, which dated all the way back to July 11. Since the All-Star Break, Townsend is 4-1 with a 0.90 ERA in 12 games (one start).
