Legends Defeat Drive, 5-1
August 19, 2013 - South Atlantic League (SAL1)
Greenville Drive News Release
Tuesday's series finale between the Greenville Drive (25-29, 47-76) and the Lexington Legends (32-25, 65-60) was a quick moving, efficient affair. Both teams collected six hits, but it was the Legends who made those hits count, as they came away with a 5-1 victory at Fluor Field.
It was the Drive who struck first, however, as they scratched across their lone run in the fourth inning. Jesus Loya began the frame with an infield single and advanced to second on a sacrifice by Aneury Tavarez. Two batters later, Kendrick Perkins lined a single to center field for an RBI.
Miguel Almonte (5-8) allowed five hits and just that run in five innings of work to pick up the victory while punching out five.
Lexington quickly bounced back and took a 2-1 lead against Brian Johnson (1-6) in the fifth. Hunter Dozier began the frame with a double to right. He would advance to third on a wild pitch and come in to score on an infield single by Ramon Torres. During Kenny Diekroeger's at-bat, Torres advanced to second on a wild pitch, moved to third when Jayson Hernandez's throw bounced into center field, and scored on the third wild pitch of the inning.
Dozier, who went 3-4 with two RBIs, was prominently involved in the other two run-scoring innings for the Legends as well. He lined an RBI single to right in the sixth to score Raul Mondesi, and he drove in another run against Drive reliever Jack McGeary in the eighth when his groundball stayed just inside the third base line for a double. Fred Ford added a sacrifice fly to left later in the inning to bring the score to its final margin.
Three Lexington relievers combined for four hitless innings to finish the game.
Dozier was the lone Lexington batter with a multi-hit game, while Keaton Briscoe collected a pair of hits for Greenville.
The Drive will begin a three-game series with the Rome Braves on Tuesday night at Fluor Field. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05. LHP Cody Kukuk (4-11, 4.53) will take the mound for the Drive, while RHP Jason Hursh (1-1, 0.72) is the scheduled starter for the Braves.
