Charlie Haeger Named I.L. Pitcher of the Week

The International League announced today that Syracuse outfielder Jeff Kobernus and Pawtucket pitcher Charlie Haeger have been named the League's Batter and Pitcher of the Week for the period from August 12-18. Syracuse has now produced the IL Batter of the Week five times this season, including Zach Walters (June 10-16 and July 22-28), Chris Rahl (June 17-23), and Tyler Moore (July 29-Aug. 4). Haeger's weekly honor is the third for a member of the PawSox this season, following Mark Hamilton (May 6-12) and Steven Wright (July 1-7).
CHARLIE HAEGER, Pawtucket Red Sox IL PITCHER OF THE WEEK
Right-hander Charlie Haeger was the League's lone two-win pitcher over the past week. He won consecutive starts for the first time this season, going 6.0 innings in each victory. The first came Tuesday evening at home against Louisville, as he struck out six and allowed just one run in a 5-1 PawSox triumph. The knuckleballer was equally good Sunday afternoon against Buffalo, surrendering just three hits and one run while striking out five as Pawtucket won 3-1and moved 1.0 game in front of Norfolk for the Wild Card playoff berth. Haeger, who also has 12 starts in Double-A this season, is now 4-3 for Pawtucket.
29-year-old Charlie Haeger has pitched professionally since 2001. He is a veteran of 34 games in the major leagues, coming between 2006 and 2010 with the White Sox, Padres, and Dodgers. He missed the entire 2012 season following Tommy John surgery. Haeger is a native of Livonia, Michigan.
JEFF KOBERNUS, Syracuse Chiefs IL BATTER OF THE WEEK
Over the past seven days Jeff Kobernus of Syracuse hit .375 and led the International League with twelve hits and six stolen bases. Kobernus hit safely in his first seven games this week, including a 4-4 effort Thursday night in which he delivered the game-winning RBI to beat Lehigh Valley 2-1. He also had his eighth multi-steal game of 2013 on Monday. Kobernus is now 2nd in the IL with a .323 batting average this season and is tied for 2nd in the League with 39 stolen bases.
25-year-old Jeff Kobernus is in his fifth season as a professional player and first playing above the Double-A level. His big league debut came earlier this season; he's now played in 15 games for the Nationals and collected four hits and a homer. Kobernus is a native of San Leandro, California.
