Summerville Native Dalton Weinstein Helps Team USA Capture Silver in 19th Maccabiah Games

North Charleston, S.C. - Summerville native and long-time South Carolina Stingrays fan, defenseman Dalton Weinstein helped Team USA capture the silver medal in Open Men's Ice Hockey at the 19th Maccabiah Games in Israel in late July.

The Maccabiah Games, an international Jewish athletic competition, is held every four years in Israel and open to Jewish and Israeli athletes. The Open Men's Ice Hockey Tournament (Ages 18-35) featured the United States, Canada, Israel and Ukraine and boasted rosters with National Hockey League, American Hockey League and ECHL talent including former Stingrays defenseman Colby Cohen (USA).

Weinstein, who grew up in the youth and junior hockey programs at the Carolina Ice Palace in North Charleston, skated in his first Maccabiah Games and is the only player, with the exception of California, south of Virginia to make the Team USA roster.

"Growing up in South Carolina, everywhere you go you are the underdog (in hockey)," said Weinstein. "My parents grew up in the New York/New Jersey area and are big New York Rangers fans. When they made their run to the (Stanley) Cup in 1994, we bought a bigger TV to watch it. When the Stingrays came to town, I became hooked on hockey. In the summers, I play with all the former Stingrays on Monday nights; Dave Seitz, Rob Concannon, Trevor Smith, Trevor Johnson and all the guys I grew up watching. Because of the Stingrays, I play hockey."

In the tournament, Team USA defeated Israel 14-0, Ukraine 5-3 and fell to Canada 6-1 in round-robin play. Weinstein and the United States advanced to the Gold Medal game with a 6-0 shutout victory over Ukraine in the semifinals and were defeated by Canada, 7-1, to take home silver. "Obviously gold would look a little nicer, but it was a great game. We just didn't capitalize on our chances. We were able to force the puck deep in the zone and everyone was passing well, but they had a few more power plays and capitalized."

The 5-foot-11, 175-pound defenseman now prepares for his senior season at Skidmore College where he was named to the ECAC East All-Academic Team the last two seasons. In 41 games with the Thoroughbreds, Weinstein racked up six assists.

"This year we are looking to be pretty good at Skidmore. Luckily the teams around us lost key players. I am hoping to go out there, do my job and be a role player."

The Stingrays kick off their 21st season of hockey in the Lowcountry on Saturday, October 19 against the defending Kelly Cup Champion Reading Royals at 7:35 p.m. in Reading, Pennsylvania and celebrate Opening Night, Stingrays Alumni Game, Zooperstars! and 2013-14 schedule giveaway at the North Charleston Coliseum on Saturday, October 26 against their in-state rivals, the Greenville Road Warriors, at 7:05 p.m.

Hall of Fame players such as Jason Fitzsimmons, Dave Seitz, Brett Marietti, Nate Kiser, Rob Concannon and Matt Scherer along with fan-favorites Pierre-Luc O'Brien, Johann Kroll, Trevor Johnson and more return to the Coliseum ice for a pregame Alumni Game before the Stingrays battle the Greenville Road Warriors later that night.
