Alvarez slam, 8 runs in the 8th drive 'Hawks victory

Andrew Aplin and Luis Alvarez combined for eight RBIs in the come from behind 14-11 victory over the High Desert Mavericks in the first game of the series Friday night at The Hangar.

In the eighth inning, Luis Alvarez went yard after consecutive singles by Heineman, Jesse Wierzbicki, and Dan Gulbransen to put Lancaster behind by just one. Aplin tripled to put the JetHawks ahead, and Heineman and Wierzbicki both picked up RBIs to give the JetHawks a 14-11 lead.

Aplin surpassed the RBI century mark at 102 with his four RBIs and Gulbransen had three RBIs to put Lancaster ahead.

The Mavericks scored in the first inning after Kyle Smith issued two walks and Steven Proscia singled to bring in their first run. The JetHawks answered right back after Aplin hit a sacrifice fly to score Delino DeShields who hit a lead-off triple down the third base line.

In the third, after three singles in a row High Desert scored to take the 2-1 lead. Pat Kivlehan doubled to bring in two more runs and give High Desert a 4-1 lead.

Aplin picked up his second RBI in the third and Meredith whacked a double to left to score DeShields. With bases loaded, Gulbransen roped a line drive into the right-center field gap to score three and put the JetHawks ahead.

Lancaster starting pitcher Smith threw five and 2/3 innings, fanned five, and allowed five runs on seven hits. Jordan Jankowski came in to pitch and gave up four runs in the seventh. Tyson Perez came in and could not get out of the inning, giving up two runs. Michael Dimock (4-0) came in for the third out of the seventh and threw a scoreless eighth. Travis Ballew pitched the ninth and picked up his 20th save of the season.

The Mavericks took the lead in the seventh off Jankowski when Kevin Rivers doubled and Kivlehan singled to pick up his third RBI of the night. Guillermo Pimentel blasted a two run shot and High Desert scored two more off Perez.

High Desert starting pitcher Matt Anderson threw just two and 2/3 innings of work and only allowed three hits. He walked four, hit a batter, and gave up six runs. Bobby Shore came in to pitch to get the last out of the third and threw three and 1/3 inning. Jeremy Dobbs (5-1) threw the seventh and gave up the eight big runs in the eighth.

The Jethawks (33-20, 72-51) will take on High Desert in game two of the home stand tomorrow night, first pitch is at 7:00 pm. Lancaster will send Brady Rodgers (9-7) to the mound. Aerospace appreciation weekend will continue at The Hangar: the first 1,000 fans will receive a Dick Rutan Bobble Head presented by Mojave Air and Space Port.
