Kannapolis Cannon Ballers News Release
GREENSBORO, N.C. (August 16, 2013) -- After giving up the lead in the eighth inning, the Kannapolis Intimidators rallied in the ninth to drop the Greensboro Grasshoppers, 5-3, on Friday at NewBridge Bank Park.
Trailing 3-2, Jacob May and Tim Anderson led off the ninth inning with base hits, and Adam Heisler walked to load the bases. Mike Marjama tied the game, 3-3, with a sac-fly to deep center field, and Jason Coats followed with a two-run double to put the Intimidators back in front, 5-3.
Reliever Stew Brase came in to work a perfect ninth inning, sealing the deal for his sixth save.
Greensboro overcame a 2-1 deficit in the home half of the eighth inning off reliever Storm Throne, who walked Juancito Martinez to lead off the frame. Martinez stole second and scored on a Cameron Flynn base hit to tie the game. Former UNC Tarheel Colin Moran pulled the Grasshoppers in front on a sac-fly.
Jefferson Olacio limited the Grasshoppers through the first seven innings, giving up one unearned run on four hits while striking out four and walking none in a no decision. Throne (1-3) earned his first win of the season.
Tim Anderson, the White Sox first round pick (17th overall) in the June 2013 First-Year Player Draft, hit his first professional home run, a two-run blast to left-center field off Matt Milroy to give Kannapolis a 2-1 lead in the fourth inning.
Milroy finished after 5.0 innings of work, allowing two runs (one earned) on four hits with three strikeouts and no walks in a no decision.
Greensboro took a 1-0 lead in the third inning when Martinez laid down a bunt single, and Olacio threw the ball away, allowing Martinez to advance to third base. He later scored on a wild pitch.
The win for Kannapolis is the team's second of the season when trailing after eight innings and the Intimidators first since April 5.
The Intimidators and Grasshoppers continue this four-game series in Greensboro on Saturday at 7 p.m. as Kannapolis sends RHP Tony Bucciferro (2-4, 3.12) to the mound to face RHP Chipper Smith (7-3, 3.44). The Intimidators return home on Tuesday, Aug. 20, for a six- game home stand against the Savannah Sand Gnats and Rome Braves.
