Fort Myers Mighty Mussels News Release

ST. LUCIE, Fla. (August 15, 2013) - The Fort Myers Miracle offense scored four runs in the fifth inning en route to a 5-3 victory over the St. Lucie Mets on Thursday night at Tradition Field.

Trailing 3-1 in the fifth, the Miracle put four consecutive hitters on base against Mets starter Matt Bowman. Byron Buxton led off with a walk and moved to third on a ground rule double from Jhon Goncalves. Stephen Wickens then earned a walk to load the bases. D.J. Hicks stepped up and hit a rocket through the middle to plate Buxton and Goncalves to tie the game, 3-3.

After Matt Koch grounded out, a wild pitch moved Wickens to third and Hicks to second. Jairo Rodriguez then hit a soft grounder to second base that scored Wickens. Then, Levi Michael ripped a 2-1 pitch from Bowman (6-4) into right field to bring Hicks around and push the Miracle lead to 5-3.

The Miracle bullpen endured a heavy workload with six scoreless innings. Starter Matt Tomshaw exited the game in the bottom of the fourth inning after allowing three runs on 10 hits.

Tyler Duffey entered with runners on first and second. Duffey (4-5) retired the next three hitters and went on to toss a scoreless fifth and sixth for the win.

Adrian Salcedo worked the seventh and eighth without giving up a run and Zack Jones closed the door. After blowing leads in the eighth and ninth innings in the last two games against St. Lucie respectively, Jones walked two, but nailed down his 12th save by striking out the side.

Bowman took the loss for the Mets after going five innings and giving up five runs on seven hits.

Hicks finished 2-for-3 with a double and two walks. Hicks' two-run single in the fifth gave him 100 runs batted in for the 2013 season between Cedar Rapids (82) and Fort Myers (18).

Wickens extended his hitting streak to 10 games with a RBI single in the third inning. Buxton pushed his hitting streak to nine games with a third inning base hit and also stole his fourth base in the last two games.
