Carolina Mudcats News Release
Zebulon, N.C. - The Carolina Mudcats took advantage of four wild pitches and five walks to drop the Myrtle Beach Pelicans 7-0 on Wednesday night at Five County Stadium. The Mudcats (28-22, 50-70) pull to within 1.5 games of the first place Pelicans (30-21, 70-50) with the win.
Cole Cook (2-1) scattered three hits over six innings, walked one and struck out four to earn the winning decision. J.D. Reichenbach and Francisco Valera combined to hold Myrtle Beach scoreless over the final three frames.
The Pelicans' Luis Parra (0-1) suffered his first defeat in only his second start. The lefty allowed four runs, three earned, on six hits over 3.2 innings. Parra struggled with his command, walking four batters. He struck out three.
Carolina took advantage of Parra's struggles to open the scoring in the second. Bryson Myles drew a walk to begin the frame, and moved to second on a groundout by Alex Lavisky. Myles advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored on a single through the right side by Erik Gonzalez.
After a walk to Jerrud Sabourin and single by Todd Hankins loaded the bases, Gonzalez scored when Logan Vick beat the relay to first on a possible double-play grounder to second.
Gonzalez singled home Paddy Matera in the third inning for a 3-0 lead.
Jordan Smith helped make it a 4-0 score in the fourth inning. Vick drew a one-out walk, raced to second on a wild pitch and moved over to third on a throwing error by the catcher Kellin Deglan. Smith followed with a chopper over the drawn-in third baseman to score Vick.
Erik Gonzalez worked a base on balls with two out in the fifth to bring up Jerrud Sabourin. The Mudcats put on the hit-and-run, which Sabourin executed perfectly with a ground ball threw the right side. With Gonzalez at third, Pelicans' reliever Randol Rojas uncorked a wild pitch to score Gonzalez.
Lavisky capped the scoring in the seventh with a two-run missile off the scoreboard beyond left field. The round-tripper was his third of the season and second at Five County.
The Mudcats continue their series with Myrtle Beach on Thursday, August 15th. It is "Carlos Danger Night" at Five County Stadium and fans that show up wearing a real or fake mustache receive a $5 box seat at the gate. Every Thursday night home game is "Thirsty Thursday" presented by Natty Greene's Brewing Company.
