With an Orem win and a 3-1 loss by the Idaho Falls Chukars at home against the Billings Mustangs, the Owlz lead the Pioneer South Division by two games overall and one game in the second half standings.
The Owlz (29-22, 9-4 Second Half, 20-16 Pioneer South) scored the first run of the game in the 2nd on a double from Michael Fish to bring home Eaves from first. They loaded the bases with no outs in the 3rd and made the score 5-1 after an RBI single from Brandon Bayardi, two-RBI double from Allbritton and an RBI single from Eaves.
The Brewers (29-23, 6-8 Second Half, 20-17 Pioneer North) scored their only run of the game on a leadoff homer by Adam Giacalone in the 2nd. The Owlz recorded their largest margin of victory of 2013 with 10 runs Tuesday night and posted a season-high eight doubles.
In the 4th, Jose Rondon hit an RBI double and three batters later, Allbritton hit Orem's sixth double in the first four innings to drive in a pair of runs. Fish led off the next inning with a solo home run to give the Owlz a 9-1 advantage and record Orem's seventh extra-base hit and 12th hit overall through the end of the 5th. In the 8th, Eaves hit an RBI double and Fish added an RBI single as the last batter of the weather-shortened contest.
Garrett Nuss (W, 1-2) threw five innings for the second time as a professional Tuesday night and allowed one run (one earned) on three hits with no walks and three strikeouts. He faced the minimum three batters in four of his five innings and retired eight Brewers in a row to end his outing. Nate Smith threw two innings and allowed only one hit with no walks and four strikeouts in relief. He retired three batters in a row after a leadoff double in the 6th and struck out the side in a 1-2-3 7th.
Home plate umpire Alex McKay called players off the field with one out in the top of the 8th at 9:17 p.m. MDT, two hours and 12 minutes after first pitch, and the game was officially called after the delay spanned one hour and six minutes.
