Ninth Inning Rally Comes up short

EDENTON, N.C - The Edenton Steamers (43-14, 3-3) got the tying run to the plate in the bottom of the ninth inning but could not score and fell to the Peninsula Pilots (37-24, 4-2) 4-1 in the deciding game three of the East Division Championship series at Historic Hicks Field on Tuesday night.
Against John Williams (George Mason University), making his second start of the post season and sixth overall, the Pilots jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the third. With one out, Peninsula worked back-to-back walks and Bradon Reitano singled to bring home Garrett Brooks for a 1-0 lead.
Jared Lyons, the starter for the Pilots cruised through four innings, allowing solo singles in the second, third, and fourth before Edenton cracked the scoreboard in the fifth. Alex Delgado (Emmanuel College) walked with one out and after a wild pitch moved him to second base, Nick Thompson (William & Mary) singled home Delgado to tie the ball game.
Just a half inning later Peninsula reclaimed the lead. With two outs and runners on first and second, both by way of an infield single, Scott Burkett brought them both home with a double off the centerfield wall for a 3-1 Pilots lead.
In the top of the seventh Peninsula tacked on an unearned run when Reitano walked and stole second base.
He came home on an error by the Steamers, their 13th in six games in the postseason. Peninsula took a 4-1 lead.
Williams pitched six innings and allowed six hits and three runs (earned) on four walks and he added four strikeouts. Williams took the loss and fell to 5-1 overall and 0-1 in the postseason.
Brandon Vick came into the game in the seventh and pitched three solid innings in relief, allowing four hits, but no runs in his outing.
In the ninth Edenton, with two outs, got a single by Nick Miller (University of Northern Colorado) and a double by Tyler Qualls (Louisiana Tech University) to put runners on second and third and bring up the tying run in the form of Alex Delgado. Delgado struck out and the ballgame and season came to an end.
Lyons earned the clinching win, pitching five and two-thirds innings, allowing one run (earned) on five hits; he walked two and struck out two. He improved to 6-1 overall and 1-0 in the postseason. Vick for his three shutout innings earned his second save of the summer and first of the playoffs.
Edenton finishes up the season 43-14 overall after going 3-3 in the postseason and 10-5 against Peninsula overall, including 7-1 at home while Peninsula moves onto the Petitt Cup Championship round vs. the Columbia Blowfish.
The Edenton Steamers are a proud member of the Coastal Plain League, the nation's hottest summer collegiate baseball league. Celebrating its 17th season in 2013, the CPL features 14 teams playing in North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia. The CPL gives college players the chance to refine their skills with the use of wooden bats.
