Winston-Salem Dash News Release

WINSTON-SALEM DASH (22-25, 60-57) at LYNCHBURG HILLCATS (18-26, 53-59)

RHP Bryan Blough (9-9, 4.45 ERA) vs. RHP Williams Perez (4-1, 1.74 ERA)

6:05 p.m. - Lynchburg City Stadium (Lynchburg, Va.)

WINSTON EDGES RED SOX, SNAPS SKID The Dash snapped a four-game losing streak by nipping the Salem Red Sox 3-2 Saturday night at LewisGale Field to avoid a sweep. Winston-Salem starter Jake Cose scattered three hits over seven scoreless frames en route to his second straight win. The Red Sox plated a pair in the ninth inning thanks to Mookie Betts' two-run single, but pinch runner Cody Koback was thrown out at the plate at the end of the play, preventing the tying run from scoring.

720 DAYS The Dash's longest losing streak in almost two years came to an end Saturday. Winston-Salem had not suffered a losing streak of four or more games in 720 days before this four-game skid from Tuesday to Friday. The Dash's last skid of more than three games came from August 16-20, 2011, when Winston dropped five in a row. During this span, Winston has recorded 13 winning streaks of four-plus games.

SWEEPING SUCCESS The Dash escaped Salem with a win in the finale of their three-game set with the Red Sox. As a result, Winston avoided its second sweep of the season. In fact, Carolina's three-game brooming of the Dash in the first series of the season represents the only time Winston-Salem has been on the wrong end of a sweep over its last 92 series. Other than the opening weekend sweep in Zebulon, the Dash have not been swept since July 9-11, 2011. During this span, Winston owns a CL-best 17 sweeps. In the Dash era (2009-present), Winston has failed to win at least one game in a series only eight times.

DOUBLE COSE Righty Jake Cose did not surrender a run over seven innings for the second straight outing to earn the win Saturday night. Cose has worked a career-high seven frames in four of his last six efforts. After posting a 7.09 earned run average in his first five starts with Winston-Salem, Cose is 4-2 with a 2.84 ERA in his last eight outings.

RBI POWER Among the 18 men in the Carolina League with 50 or more RBIs this season, six of them are Winston-Salem hitters. No other squad has more than four players in this group. Chris Curley, who also leads the circuit with 22 home runs, paces the CL with 83, while Jeremy Farrell is fourth with 65. Courtney Hawkins (61, 7th) and Kevan Smith (60, 8th) join that duo in the top 10, and both Rangel Ravelo (52, T-14th) and Grant Buckner (50, T-16th) recently joined the 50-RBI club.

BLOUGH THROUGH INNINGS Dash starter Bryan Blough leads the Carolina League and is second in High-A baseball with 137.2 innings pitched thus far this season. Blough, who entered the season with 109.2 innings of work in his minor league career, has logged at least six innings in 14 of his 23 outings, including nine of his last 12. The Newnan, Ga., native is 1-3 with a 4.13 ERA in his four starts against the Hillcats this season.

ATOP MINOR LEAGUE BASEBALL Dash infielder Micah Johnson paces all minor league players with 75 stolen bases, while he is second in the minors with 97 runs scored. In stolen bases, Billy Hamilton of Louisville (Triple-A, Cincinnati) and Travis Jankowski of Lake Elsinore (High-A, San Diego) share second place with 69. Johnson trails fellow White Sox farmhand Marcus Semien by one run away for the top spot. Semien, who played in the Triad in 2012, scored 90 runs in Double-A Birmingham and has eight so far with Triple-A Charlotte.

DASH DOTS Before his 0-for-5 effort Saturday, Kevan Smith had reached in 17 of his first 29 August plate appearances (.586 OBP)...Chris Curley owns a nine-game hitting streak, during which he is hitting .361 (13-for-36) with four RBIs and five runs scored...Courtney Hawkins has hit safely in eight of his last nine games and has only whiffed three times in his last five efforts.
