Blowfish Win, 4-3August 9, 2013 - Coastal Plain League (Coastal Plain) Columbia Blowfish
The HiToms struck early in the first as the first batter of the game, Michael White was walked. With one out, Sam Foy singled to left field and White advanced to third. Kyle Martin the next HiTom batter stepped up and line one into right field for an RBI single.
The HiToms would strike again in the top half of the fourth inning with two more runs as Champ Rowland singled to left. Andrew Cox followed him with another single, this one to right field. Max Gagnon grounded out to the third baseman and both runners advanced 90 feet. Alex Raburn stepped up to the plate and sent a sharp line drive in to center field scoring both Rowland and Cox to take a 3-to-0 lead heading into the top of the fourth.
Columbia would start fighting back in the bottom of the seventh with a run. Connor Lewis came up with one away and cranked one to the right-center fence for a double. Jake Welch was walked putting runners on first and second. With two away, both Lewis and Welch advanced on a wild pitch. D.C. Arendas was also walked to make the bases loaded for Branden Burris. Burris dribbled one to third and beat the throw out at first scoring Lewis.
In the bottom of the eighth and the Blowfish trialing the HiToms 3-to-1, Eros Modena started off the inning with a base hit to left field. Chase Shelton the next batter launched a double into right-center field putting runners on second and third. With one away, Modena scored off of a wild pitch, advancing Shelton to third. On the next play Lewis scored off of a 3-6-2 fielders choice off the bat of Welch.
With the game all knotted up at three a piece, Columbia and the HiToms went into extra innings.
The Blowfish came up to bat in the bottom of the tenth, Chase Shelton hit a leadoff double to right-center field. After a Blowfish strikeout, Lewis was intentionally walked, putting runners on first and second. Welch came up to bat again and hit an infield single to the shortstop loading the bases. The HiToms brought in a new pitcher to face D.C. Arendas. On the first pitch, the Blowfish won with the walk off as Shelton scored from third on the wild pitch.
The starting pitcher for the Blowfish tonight was right hander, Jon Olczak. Olczak threw four innings giving up three runs off of five hits, one walk and three strikeouts. Evan Raynor came on in relief tossing two innings, no runs, one hit, one walk and two strikeouts. Josh Knab came in to pitch in the top of the seventh and threw for two and a third innings allowing just one hit, no runs, no walks, and two strikeouts. Hunter Privette came in to close things down as he threw for the remainder of the game, 1.2 innings giving up no runs, one hit, no walks, and two strikeouts. Privette picked up the win.
Starter for the HiToms was Chase Cunningham, tossing 6.2 innings giving up one run, unearned, off of five hits, three walks and four strikeouts. Austin Blunt came on for just two thirds of an inning giving up two runs off of two hits, one walk and no strikeouts. Nick Miller came on tossing two innings of work, allowing one run off of three hits, one walk and four strikeouts. Brody Koerner came in with the bases loaded in the bottom of the tenth and threw a first pitch wild pitch to allow the Blowfish to score and defeat the HiToms, 4-to-3 to advance to the second round of the CPL Playoffs.
The Columbia Blowfish will be back at home Monday August 11th with first pitch set for 7:05 for the second game of the series between the Gastonia Grizzlies.
The Blowfish are now (33-20) on the season and (2-1) in post-season play of the 2013 CPL Playoffs and will be advancing to play in the second round facing the Gastonia Grizzlies.
