Carolina Mudcats News Release
Zebulon, N.C. - Despite tying setting all-time franchise record with 19 strikeouts and allowing 13 hits, the Carolina Mudcats were able to edge the Potomac Nationals 5-3 on Monday night at Five County Stadium. The Mudcats (23-18, 45-66) stayed in a first place tie with Myrtle Beach Pelicans.
Shawn Morimando (8-10) battled through early trouble to hold the Nationals (26-15, 68-42) scoreless over six innings. The lefty allowed six hits, walked two and struck out a pair.
Paul Demny (0-1) allowed four runs, two earned, on two hits over three innings in the loss. Demny struck out eight and walked three.
The Mudcats scored four times in the second off Demny. Paddy Matera drew a walk and the club loaded the bases on back-to-back singles by Tony Wolters and Bo Greenwell. Following a strikeout of Jordan Smith, Erik Gonzalez worked a base on balls to force home Matera.
Charlie Valerio hit a fly ball towards left fielder Brandon Miller. What looked like a routine catch turned into a key error when he missed the ball and rolled behind him. Valerio was credited with a sacrifice fly to score Wolters, but the error allowed Greenwell and Gonzalez to score for a 4-0 lead.
Potomac was held in check until the eighth inning. With one on, Michael Taylor crushed a breaking pitch from Josh Martin well over the left field wall to cut the deficit in half.
Smith was able to get one of those runs back from the Nationals in the bottom of the eighth with a sacrifice fly to center. The out scored Wolters from third.
Potomac mounted one last rally in the ninth against Nixon. After Justin Martin scored on an error, Caleb Ramsey singled and Michael Taylor walked to load the bases. With one out, Nixon was able to induce a comebacker from Adrian Nieto. The Mudcats turned a 1-2-3 double play to end the threat and the game.
The Mudcats continue their series with the Potomac Nationals on Tuesday night. First pitch is scheduled for 7:15 p.m. Every Tuesday night home game is "Dollar Dog Days" presented by Carolina Packers. Tickets are available by calling (919) 269-2287 or visiting carolinamudcats.com.
