Lopez, Selman And Culver Combine To Lead Wilmington To Win

August 3, 2013 - Carolina League (CarL1)
Wilmington Blue Rocks News Release

Winston-Salem, NC - Jack Lopez drove in three runs, while Sam Selman and Malcom Culver combined to hold the Winston-Salem Dash to just a single earned tally as the Blue Crew avoided being swept at BB&T Ballpark with a 4-2 win on Saturday. The victory ended a 10-game road-losing streak for Wilmington and was just its third triumph in the last 19 games. The victory kept the Rocks within one-half game of the Frederick Keys in the race for a Carolina League Northern Division wildcard berth.

Lopez provided the pop at the plate for Wilmington. With the score tied 1-1 in the third inning, the shortstop sent a liner over his defensive counterpart that brought home Ethan Chapman to give the Rocks their first lead of the night. Then, with the scored tied 2-2 in the seventh, Lopez authored the biggest hit of the game. Batting with runners at second and third and two outs, Lopez laced an opposite-field liner that split the right-centerfield gap and trickled all the way to the fence. The knock easily scored Parker Morin and Geulin Beltre to give Wilmington an edge it would not relinquish.

That was because Selman (8-8) and Culver were dealing. Selman went six strong frames, allowing only an unearned score in the first and then a second run on a two-out, two-strike wild pitch in the sixth.

He gave way to Culver in the seventh and the right-hander picked up right where Selman left off. Culver allowed just two runners to reach (one walk and one hit) on his way to three scoreless innings and his second save of the season.

Wilmington gets to enjoy the fruits of its labor for 24 hours as it gets Sunday off before heading to Salem to open a three-game series with the Red Sox. Southpaw John Lamb (4-11, 4.06) will get the ball for the Blue Crew.
