Sharks Fall at Florence

Florence, S.C. - The Wilmington Sharks (16-9, 30-22) came up just short on the road to the Florence RedWolves (6-18, 20-29) as they lost 4-2 on Friday night.

The Sharks got on the board early in the top of the first inning as Zach Stephens stayed hot at the plate as he drove a ball into left field to score Andrew Amaro to make it 1-0 Sharks. The RedWolves tied up the ballgame in the bottom half of the fifth inning on a two out RBI double off the bat of Blake Massey to make it 1-1.

The RedWovles broke through in the bottom half of the sixth inning as they picked up three runs on four hits to take a 4-1 lead going into the seventh inning. The Sharks were able to pick up a run in the top half of the seventh as Tyler Best scored on a pass ball to make it 4-2. The Sharks did have runners in scoring position in the same inning but were unable to score.

Tyson Ashcraft came into the top of the ninth inning to save the game for the RedWolves to give him his first save of the year. Matt Campbell was the winning pitcher to improve his record to 2-1 on the year. Stephens and Dolan both picked up two hits apiece for the Sharks. Massey had a good night at the plate for Florence as he went 3-4 with two RBIs.

The Wilmington Sharks will return back home on Saturday night for their final home game of the year as they take on the Morehead City Marlins with a 7:05 p.m. first pitch.

The Wilmington Sharks are a proud member of the Coastal Plain League, the nation's hottest summer collegiate baseball league. Celebrating its 17th season in 2013, the CPL features 14 teams playing in North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia. The CPL gives college players the chance to refine their skills with the use of wooden bats. Players are housed with local host families for the summer and past experiences have been very positive for both players and hosts. Furthermore, the CPL has had over 1000 alumni drafted and 62 alums - including 2011 AL MVP and Cy Young winner Justin Verlander - make their major league debut so far.
