Rock Cats Sweep Aeros out of Town
August 1, 2013 - Eastern League (EL1)
Akron RubberDucks News Release
New Britain, CT - Baseball is a game of ebbs and flows over the course of a long season. Over the last three days in New Britain, however, the Akron Aeros were caught in more of a tidal wave.
The Rock Cats crushed four home runs on Thursday, two by first baseman Reynaldo Rodriguez, as they dispatched the Aeros, 9-5, before a sellout crowd of 6,616. The win completed a three-game series sweep for the Rock Cats, and sent the Aeros to their fourth consecutive loss.
Rodriguez slugged a three-run homer in the fourth inning off Brett Brach (6-8), and followed that up with a two-run shot in the sixth to finish with five RBI on the day. His homer in the sixth extended the Cats' lead to 6-1.
Brach worked six innings and gave up six hits and six runs, all earned.
Rock Cats starter D.J. Baxendale (4-4) was tough through six innings, limiting the Aeros to just one run on a fourth inning solo homer by Jesus Aguilar. In the seventh, though, he gave up a single, double and walk to load the bases. Catcher Alex Monsalve then laced a triple off the center field wall to clear the bases. Jose Ramirez followed with an RBI groundout to score Monsalve to make it, 6-5.
The Cats (52-59) blew it back open in the bottom of the eighth, getting back-to-back home runs by Daniel Ortiz and Evan Bigley off Rob Bryson to push the lead to 9-5. Ortiz' homer was a two-run shot.
It was the first three-game sweep for the Rock Cats at home this season. Carlos Moncrief was the only Aeros player with two hits, going 2-4, with a double.
The Aeros (53-58) will continue the trip with the start of a three-game series at Altoona on Friday night at 7:00. RHP Will Roberts (7-7, 4.24) is scheduled to start for Akron, while the Curve will counter with RHP Casey Sadler (8-5, 3.39). The game will be broadcast live on Fox Sports 1350 AM, and online at www.sportsradio1350.com. For more information, please call the Aeros at 330-253-5151.
