Barons Strand 14 in 3-2 Loss to Smokies

Birmingham, AL - The Birmingham Barons could not capitalize on multiple scoring opportunities throughout the game Wednesday, falling to the Tennessee Smokies by a score of 3-2 in front of 2,873 fans at Smokies Park, Javier Baez would give the Smokies an early 2-0 lead with a two-run home run against Chris Bassitt(2-1, 3.18) in the third inning. The homer was his third in four games against the Barons in this series and 11 th on the season.

The Barons would get a run back in the fourth on an RBI double by Brandon Jacobs, giving him a 14-game hitting streak over his first 14 games with the Barons. Two innings later, the Barons would tie the game without the benefit of a hit, loading the bases after a walk and two hit batsmen by Smokies starter Matt Loosen. He would give way to reliever Jeff Antigua who would surrender a sacrifice fly to Luis Sierra, tying the game at 2-2.

The Smokies would retake the lead on a base hit by Jonathan Mote against Bassittin the seventh with what proved to be the winning run. Bassit had his longest outing since joining the Barons two weeks ago, allowing three runs on six hits while striking out four over 7.0 innings.

The Barons would threaten in the ninth, loading the bases for Cody Puckett with two outs, but his ground ball to first deflected off of first baseman Jonathan Mota, right to Arismendy Alcantara who flipped to Frank Batista to end the game. The Barons stranded a season-worst 14 runners on base as they dropped to 67-42 and 23-16 in the second half. With the win, the Smokies improved to 57-50 and 23-15 in the second half, reclaiming the second half divisional lead by a half game.

The Barons will look to pick up a series win in the rubber match tomorrow as LHP Scott Snodgress (11-7, 3.88) takes the hill against RHP Kyle Hendricks (10-3, 1.87). First pitch is scheduled for 11:00 AM CDT.
