Gateway Grizzlies News Release
SAUGET, IL - Gateway starting pitcher Tucker Jensen fired eight strong innings for the second straight start and the Grizzlies took care of the Frontier Greys 9-2 at GCS Ballpark Tuesday night.
The win gave the Grizzlies (39-24) their third straight series win and their 14th of the season. Gateway now has a four game lead in the West Division.
Jensen (6-4) allowed only two runs on five hits while throwing 123 pitches. The right-hander from Ormond Beach, FL walked four batters and struck out three. It was the fourth eight inning start for Jensen on the season and his second straight win.
Chris McClendon drove in a run on a sacrifice fly in the first inning and brought in another run in the third inning on a fielder's choice to give the Grizzlies a 2-0 lead after three innings, despite only one hit as a team.
Jon Myers cranked his league-leading 14 home run of the season in the sixth inning to score two runs and improve the Grizzlies lead to 4-0.
Jonathan Johnson started a five-run Gateway eighth inning with a solo home run, which was his fourth of the season and a new career-high. Antone DeJesus brought in two runs with a single and Vladimir Frias knocked in two with a double later in the inning.
Jensen allowed a two-run home run to Eric Avila in the eighth inning for the only two Greys' runs of the game.
Landon Hernandez, Myers and DeJesus all had two hits for the Grizzlies.
The Grizzlies head to Rockford for a doubleheader Wednesday night. First pitch in game one is set for 6:05. Tim Brown (9-2) will start game one and Brett Higginbotham (2-3) will be the game two starting pitcher.
The Grizzlies return to GCS Ballpark Saturday to start a series with River City.
