CornBelters Fall in Pitchers' Duel at Washington

July 30, 2013 - Frontier League (FL) Normal CornBelters

WASHINGTON, Pa. - The Normal CornBelters, presented by Illinois Corn Farmers, lost a pitchers' duel to the Washington Wild Things 3-2 on Tuesday night at CONSOL Energy Park. The CornBelters continue the nine-game road trip with the middle series of the trio of three-game sets at Florence on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. Game times are 5:35 Central each night.

The Wild Things scored with a two-out rally in the third inning when Stewart Ijames doubled and came home on a single up the middle by C.J. Beatty.

The Belters earned their first baserunner from Washington starter Gary Lee with a fourth-inning one-out walk to Mike Schwartz, who went to third on the first Normal hit, a single by Alex San Juan, but the guests could not push a run across the plate.

Normal tied the game in the seventh when Ryan Lashley reached on a fielder's choice, moved to second on an Alex San Juan base hit and scored on a throwing error to tie the game at 1-1.

Washington grabbed the lead in the bottom of the seventh on a lead-off triple from Shain Stoner and a double to the left field corner by A.J. Nunziato. A sacrifice moved Nunziato to third, and he scored after a diving catch by Keoni Manago in right field after the throw came in late to give the hosts a 3-1 lead.

The CornBelters cut the deficit to 3-2 after drawing a pair of walks to lead off the eighth, then sacrificing both to second and third. A fielder's choice on an Oscar Garcia RBI ground-out scored one run but the Belters could not push the second runner in.

Matt Phillips (2-2) earned the win in relief and Amalio Diaz pitched the final six outs for his third save. Ryan Demmin (6-4) took the loss with 7.1 innings of work, giving up eight hits and all three runs while walking one and striking out nine.
