Saints Lose Ground in the Wild Card with 4-3 Loss to RailCats

July 26, 2013 - American Association (AA) - St. Paul Saints News Release

ST. PAUL, MN - With North division leader Fargo-Moorhead losing to Sioux City the Saints had a golden opportunity to pick up ground on the teams they trail in both the division and wild-card race on Friday night. However, the Saints could not close the gap, instead suffering a 4-3 loss to the Gary SouthShore RailCats at Midway Stadium in front of 5,553.

With the score tied at three in the top of the seventh inning Brian Kolb lifted a sacrifice fly to right field off of Saints reliever Bryan Henry that scored Craig Maddox and proved to be the winning run for Gary. Maddox reached base with a one out double and had moved to third on a single by Christian Vitters. Henry received the loss, his first as a member of the Saints

The RailCats got on the board in the very first inning against Saints starter Drew Gay. Adam Klein doubled to start the game and scored on an RBI triple to right-center by Cristian Guerrero to make it 1-0 Railcats.

The Saints didn't wait long to answer back scoring a pair off of Gary hurler James Adkins in the second. Brandon Tripp led off with a double, that narrowly missed being a home run, and Jose Hernandez followed with a double of his own to tie the score. With two outs Trevor Hairgrove hit a high chopper to second baseman Danny Pulfer, who threw the ball away as he tried to hurry a throw to first, allowing Hernandez to score and the Saints led 2-1.

Things got away from Drew Gay in the third inning when he walked the first two batters he faced. He rebounded by retiring the next two RailCats before giving up a single to Drew Martinez that loaded the bases. Gay walked the next batter, Zac Mitchell, which tied the game and brought the end of the night for the young right-hander. Gay worked just 2.2 innings, giving up three runs while walking four and striking out three. Dylan Thomas came on from the bullpen and also walked the first batter he faced, Danny Pulfer, which pushed across another run and made it 3-2 Gary.

In the Saints fourth, Adam Frost scored Dwight Childs with a two-out RBI single to tie the score at three. The Saints offense struggled for the remainder of the night, tallying just three hits over the final five innings against Gary starter James Adkins and the RailCats bullpen.

The Saints and RailCats will do battle again Saturday night at 7:05 p.m. in game two of the three game series at Midway Stadium. The Saints give the ball to RHP Billy Soule (0-0, 9.86) while the RailCats counter with LHP Ari Ronick (6-5, 4.30). It is Good Eggs and Scams Part II presented by the Better Business Bureau of Minnesota and North Dakota. The game can be heard on Club 1220 AM and in the ballpark on 87.9 FM.
