Syracuse Mets News Release
The Syracuse Chiefs, the Triple-A affiliate of the Washington Nationals, came from behind to beat the Louisville Bats, 3-2, on Wednesday. Eury Perez tallied the walk-off single in the ninth that scored Zach Walters from third base. Syracuse scored a run in the seventh, eighth and ninth innings after trailing 2-0.
In the bottom of the ninth inning, Walters led off the frame with a double down the right-field line. He moved to third base on a sacrifice bunt from Kelly Shoppach. Louisville manager Jim Riggleman elected to move center fielder Billy Hamilton into the infield to give his team five infielders. Chris Rahl then pinch-hit for Erik Davis and earned a walk. That brought up Perez, who laced a single into left field that scored Walters to win the game for Syracuse (45-58).
Louisville (52-54) got on the board against Syracuse starter Caleb Clay in the top of the third inning. With one out, Kristopher Negron reached on an infield single. Chad Rogers then laid down a sacrifice bunt to move Negron to second. The next batter, Hamilton, looped a single to center field that scored the runner to give the Bats a 1-0 lead.
The Louisville lead grew in the seventh. Felix Perez started the frame with a single to right field. Mike Hessman then hit a double to deep center field that scored Perez to make the score 2-0.
Both starting pitchers were effective throughout most of the game. Clay allowed just two runs on five hits, while Louisville starter Chad Rogers threw six scoreless innings and struck out four batters.
Syracuse finally put a run across the plate in the bottom of the seventh. Walters smacked the third pitch of the inning over the wall in right-center field to cut the deficit to 2-1.
The Chiefs tied the score in the eighth inning. Danny Espinosa tapped a single up the middle of the infield to lead off the frame. He moved to second on a groundout by Tyler Moore. Following a strikeout, Chris Marrero hit a single to left field that scored Espinosa to tie the game at two.
Syracuse and Louisville wrap up their series on Thursday at 11:00 . Right-hander Yunesky Maya is on the hill for the Chiefs against right-hander Yohan Pino.
