NILES, OH - Paul Hendrix drew a bases-loaded walk in the bottom of the eighth inning to deal the State College Spikes an extra-inning defeat and give the Mahoning Valley Scrappers a 2-1 win in game one of Wednesday night's doubleheader at Eastwood Field.

State College (18-16) was held to just two hits in the game. Jimmy Bosco's RBI single in the fifth inning was the Spikes' first hit, and gave State College a 1-0 lead. David Washington's single in the sixth inning was the other Spikes hit.

Victor DeLeon (1-2) took the loss for the Spikes after allowing a leadoff walk to Cody Ferrell in the eighth. DeLeon then gave up a single to Claudio Bautista and intentionally walked Nellie Rodriguez after a wild pitch before his 3-2 delivery to Hendrix went high to give Mahoning Valley (13-23) the win.

DeLeon allowed a run on a hit and walked three total over 1 1/3 innings. Spikes starter Jimmy Reed went a career-long six innings in the no-decision, fanning three while yielding a run on seven hits and a walk. The run scored on Martin Cervenka's solo homer to lead off the fifth inning for the Scrappers

Each team also had a runner thrown out at the plate in the game.

The two teams will now complete their doubleheader with a second seven-inning game at Eastwood Field, scheduled to begin at approximately 8:50 p.m. Right-hander Andrew Pierce (0-1) is slated to start for State College, with left-hander Luis Lugo (1-3) on the mound for Mahoning Valley.
