Aberdeen IronBirds News Release

Aberdeen falls in series opener, 1-0

Last night, the Aberdeen IronBirds managed just five hits and could not push across a run and fell, 1-0. Mike Yastrzemski had a double, and was one of four Aberdeen base runners to reach second base. The IronBirds had the tying run on base in the ninth, but Conor Bierfeldt struck out and Hector Veloz popped out to end the game. Austin Urban took the loss, falling to 1-3. He went four innings, allowed six hits, one run, and struck out one. Steve Brault got the start, going three innings, allowing one hit and one walk, while tying a season best with five strikeouts. Jorge Rivera pitched the eighth and ninth innings, allowing a hit and a pair of walks, while fanning three.

Schoop Makes Aberdeen Debut

Jonathan Schoop made his Aberdeen debut in a rehab assignment last night. He played all nine innings at second base and went 2-4 at the plate with two singles and a strikeout. Schoop was signed by the Orioles in August, 2008 out of Willemstad, Curacao. He spent all of 2012 with Double-A Bowie and has been recovering from a lower back injury.

Tough Stretch, But Still Standing

Aberdeen has now lost four of five and six of their last nine, but are still in good standing. They trail the Hudson Valley Renegades by 2.5 games and sit alone in second place in the McNamara Division. The IronBirds are also in the thick of the Wild Card race as the season reaches halfway. Lowell currently leads the Wild Card, but the IronBirds trail the Spinners by two games.

On the mound tonight...

RHP Steve Johnson is making a rehab start tonight for the IronBirds. He made his major league debut last season with the Orioles. He pitched in five games for Baltimore this season before being put on the disabled list with a left oblique strain. This will be his second rehab start, as he went two innings for the GCL Orioles back on Saturday. In those two innings, he did not allow a hit, while walking one and striking out three. He will be opposed by RHP Deyvi Jimenez. Jimenez will be making his third start of the season for the Lake Monsters, and his second straight against the IronBirds. In the game on Friday night in Burlington, he pitched six innings, allowing just two hits, one run (a Scott Kalush home run), walking one, and striking out nine.
