State College Spikes News Release

-SPIKES START ROAD SERIES VS. SCRAPPERS WITH TWIN BILL: The State College Spikes, number one in the New York-Penn League in batting average at .291, will get a delayed beginning to their three-game series against the Mahoning Valley Scrappers with a doubledheader of two seven-inning games tonight at Eastwood Field. Last night's game was postponed to due wet field conditions after heavy rains in the late afternoon. The Spikes and Scrappers split a pair of games at Eastwood Field earlier this year, and State College swept a three-game set from Mahoning Valley at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park from July 7-9. The Spikes are coming off a 4-2 homestand. State College is 37-38 all-time against the Scrappers, and 13-24 in games at Eastwood Field.

-LAST GAME: The Spikes took the lead in the bottom of the fifth before the rain moved in and ended the game early, with State College grabbing a 4-2 win in five innings over the Connecticut Tigers on Monday afternoon at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park. Despite State College still being at bat with no outs when the game was called in the bottom of the fifth, the Spikes were awarded the victory per Rule 4.10 (c)(2). The game was halted right after Carson Kelly had produced an RBI single to increase the Spikes' lead. Kelly had another big game for the Spikes, going 2-for-3 with two runs batted in after notching three hits in the game that was completed earlier on Monday, which the Spikes lost, 5-2. Willy Paulino tossed a complete game for the Spikes in the win, the first since Nicolas Suero went six innings in a complete game on August 23, 2007.

-REED, PETREE, PIERCE TEAM UP FOR SPIKES ON MOUND: Left-hander Jimmy Reed leads the way in a "piggyback" tandem on the mound for State College tonight against the Scrappers in game one. Reed, the sixth-round draft choice of the Cardinals this year out of Maryland, will be followed by right-hander Nick Petree, the 2013 ninth-round pick of the Cardinals, who went five innings for the win on Wednesday. Right-hander Andrew Pierce is set to get the ball for game two after tossing a career-high five innings on Thursday.

-MATHEWS, LUGO SET TO GET BALL FOR SCRAPPERS: Left-hander Kenny Mathews is scheduled to make the start for Mahoning Valley this evening in game one, followed by fellow southpaw Luis Lugo in game two. Mathews, the seventh-round draft choice of the Indians this year out of Riverside (CA) Community College, has made four starts, but none longer than three innings. Lugo is making his third appearance of the year against State College, and took the loss on July 7 after giving up four runs in five innings.

-RAMOS ON A TEAR FOR STATE COLLEGE: Steven Ramos is back out in front in the New York-Penn League with a .410 batting average, and is second in on-base percentage at .437. Ramos notched hits in both of the games played on Monday, and now has base hits in 16 of his last 18 games. The outfielder is hitting .448 with a .484 on-base percentage, four doubles and five RBI in the month of July

-SPIKE MARKS: The Spikes added oufielder Luis Perez to the roster Monday after outfielder Ronald Castillo went on the DL with an arm injury...2009 Spikes pitcher Victor Black is set to be called up to the Pittsburgh Pirates, and will become the 21st former Spike to the major leagues when he sees action
