Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders News Release
SWEPT AWAY: Despite a day away thanks to Mother Nature, the RailRiders saw some trends continue in their Tuesday twinbill with Toledo, along with a first. For the first time all season, the RailRiders got swept in a double-dip, losing 4-1 in 10 innings and 3-1 in the scheduled seven. A three-run homer by each of the Mud Hens' top two prospects, Avisail Garcia in game one and Nick Castellanos in game two, proved the differences. The RailRiders also saw their losing streak reach five with five runs scored in that time.
ON THE RUNS: In their last five, the RailRiders have hit .162 (25-for-154) with 10 extra-base hits, 11 walks, 37 strikeouts and a 1-for-33 (.030) effort with men in prime real estate. With just a single score in each of those five games, the RailRiders have endured the franchise's lowest-scoring five-game span since around this same time last year. From July 29-Aug. 3, 2012, SWB scored five runs between a game at Pawtucket, two versus Pawtucket and a pair at home against Indianapolis. The team went 1-4 in that time while SWB hit .160 (25-for-156) with 10 extra-base hits, nine walks, 52 strikeouts and went 2-for-32 (.063) with men in scoring position.
SINGLE SCORES: SWB has not been held to one run or less in five straight games since a dreadful stretch in the 2009 campaign. From May 10-15, the defending champs scored just one run. They were blanked in losing four straight at Louisville (2) and versus Charlotte (2) before a May 14 rainout was followed by a 1-0 triumph in the opener of a May 15 doubleheader. In fact, four consecutive shutout losses were followed by three shutout wins in succession. That year's IL MVP, Shelley Duncan, snapped the scoring slide with first-inning RBI double that plated Austin Jackson in the first inning of the twinbill. The then-SWB Yankees went on to win the IL North with an 81-60 record, but got swept by Durham in the Governor's Cup Championship Series. Duncan now plays for Durham while Jackson is one of the talented Tigers outfielders forcing Garcia and Castellanos to remain with Triple-A Toledo.
TROUBLE AT HOME: The run-scoring drought has come entirely during this homestand. Five straight setbacks at PNC Field has tied the team's longest home losing streak of 2013. The team has not lost six straight home games since dropping seven in a row at the old PNC Field from Aug. 9-19, 2011. That was spread over two different homestands with losses to Gwinnett (3) and Durham (4) and 11 total runs scored by SWB. The franchise has not lost six straight home games in a single homestand since at least 2004. That includes the entirety of the affiliation with the New York Yankees. This year's unit is 26-24 on the road, hitting .268/.347/.429 while scoring 4.7 runs/game. At home, it is 23-30, hitting .247/.324/.378 while plating less than 3.7 runs/game.
ON THE WAY BACK: Before yesterday's game, reliever Sam Demel, who was activated from the disabled list on Monday, pitched for the first time since June 15 at Lehigh Valley. He tossed a scoreless inning to lower his ERA to 1.36. That includes a 1.15 mark at home and devastation for right-handed hitters (.154). The Yankees also announced yesterday that Alberto Gonzalez has been outrighted back to SWB after his second tour of duty with the Yankees this season. He has seen time at second, short, third, left, right and atop the mound between his minor and big league time this season.
OFF THE RAILS: Shortly before yesterday's game, the Yankees announced that Walter Ibarra was placed on the DL...Catcher Ryan Baker, who like Gonzalez has also pitched in game action this season, was activated in a corresponding move...Ronnier Mustelier was 0-for-7 with a strikeout in last night's doubleheader...Since coming back from the DL, he has gone 1-for-23 (.043) with a double, a run scored and three strikeouts...SWB's next homer will be its 100th of 2013...Only Buffalo (103) enters today with more dingers in the IL.
